Poll: team cards in player sets

Should team cards be allowed in player sets where the player's picture is just part of the team photo (or in the case of the late '70s Cubs, collection of head shots)? ['75 Topps and Mini Indians Team for F. Robinson isn't counted in this poll, because he's a separate picture and the only one named on the front.]

Personally, I don't like any multi-player cards (such as League Leaders) in player sets.

I also don't like any cards (highlights, league leaders, etc) in team sets other than those cards that would typically be shown on a team checklist.

The only exception to this is of course multi-player rookie cards.
  • it's at the very low end of what's acceptable but yes, it should count. if the player's photo is featured (albeit as part of a team) on the card, it should count. if the set is weighted (not sure if this is done with player sets), it should have the lowest weighting.

I vote no. Topps would recycle alot of team photos so you can't be sure if the player is on the photo if it is at the end or beginning of his career. Also if he was traded he may or may not make that team photo. It would require someone to verify the player is pictured on the actual team photo. I think the only set it should be considered for is the master set and there I still vote no.

  • I don't have a problem with League leader cards or the like but team cards are way off. Most you can't even make out the players and sometimes they were recycled pics and your player might not even be in it.

Scrolling through the Nolan Ryan Master set I noticed at the end of the list it has cards that are optional? Is this something new?
I voted no on the team cards and would say no on cards of other players with the certain player in the photo such as 76 Ontiveras has Schmidt, 71 Harrelson has Ryan and there is an 83 Topps card of a first baseman that has Sandberg on it.

  • From what I have been led to believe the optional cards are cards that there have been less than three graded so they won't be offically added to the set until then. I personally think this is crazy. If it's in regards to 1 of 1's or something along that line then it's fine but just beacuase a card is newly uncovered or based on a new holder now can be graded then it should be added directly to the set. One instance I have is McCarthy postcards. I was told that there was no specific printing date that can put on them and there are supposedly a number of fakes that PSA doesn't grade them. Well, now they are optional in the Rose Master set. Frustrating. Sorry to get off topic

Supposedly, it was only for oddball cards that PSA would wait until there were at least 3 graded to add them to a Master Set. I have an OPC card of Rollie Fingers that seems to have gotten that treatment. Our neighbors to the north aren't really that oddball, are they?

[yeah, this post is partly about TTTing the thread, since it has a poll]

I disagree with allowing team cards on the player sets. It's a PLAYER set and not a TEAM set. So, it doesn't have a place in there. I'm okay with league leader cards because the player is featured on the card and not part of a team.

I would also be okay with league leader and all-star cards. Back before the day of insert popularity, that would have been considered basic cards of that player. Team cards should only be used if the person is obviously identifiable, then perhaps as the new option feature.

    NO

what would be next checklists that have the players name on it?

I am ok with multi player cards such as league leaders and if not mistaken only those checklists that have the players picture on it like the 67 set or is it 69?

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • There is a checklist card in the George Foster Master set. I refuse to get that one.

Wow, at some point will PSA try and make this consistent?

  • I emailed the Set Registry ladies right after I read this post about checklist cards. This is what I got back today:

Can you please send front and back scans of the cards in question, we will remove them if they do not qualify but we need scans to confirm.

    Thank you,

I'm not exactly sure what "qualify" means but hopefully we can get this straightened out. I would also like to work on getting team cards removed from the Player Registries.

Keep us posted, but I thought PSA made a policy decision that Team Cards would be allowed, despite the fact that 80% of player collectors were not in favor of it.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
