Anybody have a grader damage a Card?Pics Added

I have a card i sent in to get graded. I have a picture to prove the damage wasn't there. And No damage could not be done from shipping.
The top left corner has been flipped over. Looks like he dropped the card and tried to smooth it back over.
I understand nobody's perfect but this was my 1952 Parkhurst Dickie Moore rookie that honestly and i mean honestly had a shot at a PSA 10
a PSA 9 for sure. Now because of corner being damaged they graded it a PSA 7.
I am really P-s-ed at this.
Anybody else have something like this happen? If so is it worth a call to them besides getting upset and yelling at the other person on the other end. The grader should of told his boss what had happened. The card is dead centered and had and i stress had 4 perfect corners and is white as the day it came out of the pack. Also i sent in a Howe which came back a PSA 7. Sorry but the grader really missed on this one.
Anyways any help would be appreciated.
I would post a scan of the before and after but i cannot get the pixels to go down that low to post them. If i e-mail them to somebody can you do it for me?
Thanks Steve

I would recommend PM'ing Carol here.
  • I have had a card damaged before. It was in a GAI 9.5 holder that I cracked and sent to PSA. It graded a 9. I cracked it, and sent it back again. This time, it came back a 9 but it also came with a top left bent over corner. Easily visible and clear as day. I didn't have any proof that I didn't do it, but I doubt it was in that condition when the grader had it, or it never would have graded a 9. It had to have happened in the sealing process, or somewhere between the grader and the sealer.

I never yelled or complained. I don't know what good it would have done since I didn't scan it before I sent it off.

IMS - I don't think a scan is necessary in your case. The card was pretty obviously damaged between grading and holdering; I don't think Joe would think a grader 9'ed a card with a bent corner. Give him a call.

  • Card is since long gone.
This happened maybe a year ago.
Sure, it was a $100 card (1992 TSC Favre)
I just bent over and took the loss.

Chalk it up to not fully trusting others with something that isn't theirs.
  • My friend alan sent in some cards for grading and took scans of them before sending them in... Well one card that should of been a 10 or at least a 9 was given a 7. Top right corner was dinged bad. He called PSA and emailed the scans and cleared up the problem. They fest-up to damaging the card and made out a check for the damage.

Seriously, I'm sure we'd all love to see some scans. I'm sure this stuff happens, as it's impossible to grade tens of thousands of cards without some damage. It sucks, but hopefully PSA acknowledges the damage and compensates you.

I have experieced this several times and I was luck that it involved small value cards so I didn't make a big deal
out of it. Another issue is darn finger prints from PSA graders. Inside the slab and on cards.

Come on PSA !! You can do better.

Sure, it happens. I used to scan all of my PSA subs after this happened to me. It was along time ago. I'm talking like the first couple years PSA graded. I had about 50 Ryan commons in premium sets that I picked through and sent the best. A couple came back PSA 4-5-6 with damaged corners and such. Once I had an entirely different card come back...I think it was a 90 Leaf Ryan common. Centering was all off compared to the scan...must have been a replacement card for damaged one. I had good grades on the rest of the sub so I just let it go. I've found life to be happier when I don't complain. Maybe I'd raise a fuss if it was $1000 card but I stick to cards I can flip easily, $20-$50, so I can't get hurt even if they spill Taco Bell on one.

Human error does happen and I think they are close to 100% with my subs the last year.

I do have a bunch of 91 DS cards coming in the mail that I'm going to have to look over. I sent the best from a 600 card lot that I'm in the middle of grading. I've had mostly 9's and a few rare 10's but the two I sent in the last free sub were both graded 8's image

imageI think every submission of over 10 cards with GAI. The first time I submitted with about 50 cards, the cards came back and 4 cards had the black insert sealed on top of the cards. Expensive cards. Garvey rookie (8), 64 Mantle (7). This happens alot from what I've heard. Needless to say PSA gets 95% of my business now. GAI did compensate me with a bunch of free gradings. PSA has damaged a lower value card here and there. I believe most of the damage is in the holdering process. All of the company's with that damaging black insert need to get rid of that thing.

This heartbreaker occurred at the National in Chicago a couple of years ago. The Mantle was submitted to PSA for onsite grading ($50) and was an easy 8 - I got it back in a 5 holder with a tiny, straight line indentation - like it had been pinched between two slabs - along the bottom right border. It is Micro-small, definitely not a wrinkle, and definitely wasn't there before I submitted it. I went crazy, but only got a refund.

I was so ticked off, I cracked it out and left the slab carcass at the PSA pick up area.

I later sent it to SGC on principle(where it is now). Whenever anybody posts about smoothing out a wrinkle, or soaking, or spooning I get tempted... Such a bummer.

My first submission years ago, I sent in three 85 donruss clemens and three pucketts all fresh from factory sets. Great centering, blah, blah all should have been at least 9's if not 10's. Anyways my young dumb grading ass sent them in to be graded in card saver 2's. All came back 6's with small creases in the same spot. Let this be a lesson to all as PSA is not responsible for damage to cards not in a CS1. Another life lesson learned.image

    Steve's after PSA scan.....

I agree with Steve. The top left corner on the Moore has been damaged between scans.... No comment on the Howe.

I've had corners flipped on the back of cards a few times during either the grading or sealing process. I'm not sure there's anything you can do about it.

When Steve Rocchi ran things at PSA, I had a few cards get pinched in the holders. They were lock 8's when I sent them in, then after the pinch, they slabbed them as PSA 4's. They did make good on them on a buy back however.

I think it's just the luck of the draw.

Obviously in a perfect world they would take responsibility for
    any mishandling of the cards.

Sorry this happened to your cards Steve.

ps- it's not a perfect world.

I drove 5 hours to a pittsburgh show, spent the night, spent 5 hours at the show picking out some sure 8's and sent them in. 2 came back with major creases on the back and were slabbed as PSA 3's. Pissed me off.
  • I send in cards (1993 Refractors) that are 100% P.E.R.F.E.C.T. and when I receive them back in PSA 10 cases, I usually see that there are:

    1. An imperceptible "touch" to a corner or two.
    2. A few surface scratches that were not there before.

I always just assume it occurs during the soft sleeve --> Card Saver I --> out --> soft sleeve --> Card Saver I --> etc. --> slabbing process.

Since the cards are being handled by humans, they could only be received back by you in less than originally shipped condition.
  • Thanks Bob for posting pics, I really appreciate it !!

I enlarged the Moore to get a better look. I'm sorry to say this but that "something" on the top left does in fact appear on the original scan.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • I have been fortunate and have never had a card damaged by my grader (SGC). It sucks that it does happen from time to time.
