ebay seller sandiegowill will hays opinions?

I bought a card from him a month ago and it's been nothing but a nightmare. Anybody else have any experience with him good or bad? I'd like to think I'll get my card but it sure seems like I'm getting blown off.

I have bought from him with no problems. He is not the fastest shipper, but I believe he states that up front.

I won 5 auctions with him in early January and the experience was good.

Will has been around forever and he's 100% trustworthy. If you have a problem, let him know. If you come at him like he's an idiot though, you'll have a new problem. Treat him with respect. He does a lot of business and probably can't control the shipping of every item.

I bought a T202 Cobb from him last year, and the service was perfect.

I've had several dealings with him, most of which were smooth, but I recall one time it took almost 3 weeks to get my package and when I queried after 10 days I got some BS story about how they can't be held responsible for slow mail, etc. Fortunately, my package did arrive before I filed a Paypal claim. They weren't very helpful, I do remember that.

i believe I won some 55 Topps raw cards from him earlier this year. The best I can remember everything went ok, I didnt care much for the way he shipped. The cards all came in a large regular envelope, with a piece of thin carboard.

I bought from them a lot a year ago and they were not the most pleasant. I quit buying from them until a week ago and it was only because I was really wanted what they had. They are probaly up there with the rudest seller I have dealt with though. If you send them an email they respond with short one worded responses. It does not surprise me you had a problem with them. I would not suggest them.
  • I won a couple graded cards from him a few weeks ago. Well-packaged, took about 12-14 days to receive the cards. No complaints from me.

He's an a$$hole. I e-mailed him that he had a PSA 8 listed as a PSA 9 and he pretty much called me a "card loser with too much time on my hands."

Wow. Will Hays has posted before on the network 54 boards. That comment seems out of character, but if somebody jumped me like that for pointing out a simple mistake in their listing, I'd call them an a$$hole too. Most sellers are thankful when people point out errors...saves them trouble (and sometimes money) down the line.

I've only had a few dealings...no problems with delivery...but I remember buying a raw set that wasn't as strong as I would have liked, but it wasn't bad enough to warrant asking for a refund.
  • "Well-packaged, took about 12-14 days to receive the cards"

    thats ridiculous shipping time.
  • i won a 1975 topps baseball rack pack with a lynn rc showing on the front from him in november--it took almost two weeks before i received it (i think they shipped it usps parcel post which is roughly the equivalent of pony express minus the covered wagons). i also won a bunch of 1959 topps baseball psa 7's and 8's the same day i won the rack pack and everything was shipped together. the rack pack was folded up end over end like a wallet, which sort of pissed me off. the 59's were wrapped in newspaper. i remember the box arrived on a day when it poured all day and the idiot postal carrier left the box in a small wet spot (a very shallow puddle) on my landing--needless to say, the entire box was somewhat damp (also because it was sitting out in the rain all day). when i opened the box, the psa holders were a little damp and had condensation on them; after throwing them in the clothes dryer, they were fine the next day (just kidding guys)--i guess both will and the postal carrier were equally at fault. i was very close to emailing him to tell him he should use bubble wrap instead of newspaper because bubble wrap is more impermeable than newspaper. steve hart of bbcexchange told me he ships rack packs flat in a box thats like a pizza box; although i've had several transactions with mr. hays, all of which were problem-free (with the exception of the one i mentioned--the psa cards were fine and didnt get wet, only the holders felt damp because they were cold), he is terrible at replying to emails and could take a lesson or two on how to ship and pack goods from steve hart, who packs and ships as professionally and as impeccably as is humanly possible.
always looking for 1958 and 1959 topps baseball in psa 7 and 8
  • Bought from him many times, only problem was the amount of time to get cards.

Bought from him a number of times through the years always got the item a little slow at times but I'm spoiled by sellers like 4 Sharp Corners who seem to have the package there in a heartbeat.

great stuff, never had a problem.

Thanks guys. I bought an sgc 92 card and they sent me the same card in an 88. I bought it for a gift for a friend who is a former packer and going thru a rough time. Been waiting more than 3 weeks for the replacement card with nothing but rude emails.

The slow shipping comments make me feel like it's not just me, and that's what I was looking for. Thanks again!

  • I made a purchase of several PSA 1973's and the expereince was good. He may be a little slower in sending out the cards. I don't think you have much to worry about.

    Nolie
  • Never a problem here.
  • Sounds like he has about 2/3 happy and 1/3 pissed customers. Not a very good business model. I always ship the same or immediate next day and am an excellent packager. If you expect to make $$$ on eBay, you have to count on repeat customers. In addition to delivering top-quality cards, the next most important thing is being a careful and expedient shipper. Simple, really.

It helps to know what you're selling as well, and to stand behind it. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case here.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I've been considering buying some ungraded cards from him. Does he grade his cards fairly? He seems like he tries to be honest and accurate.

    Thanks

I've won both psa cards and some vintage magazines from Will Hays. The packaging job was excellent on all the occasions. Shipping wasn't the fastest, but I could care less about speed of delivery.

No complaints here. Would recommend to all buyers.

Instead of emailing any problems, try calling them during their normal business day to get questions answered. They deal in a lot of volume and probably don't have the time to respond to each email in a timely manner.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Actually, they return e-mails quite promptly, but if there is a problem be prepared for a somewhat rude and unsympathetic response, if I recall correctly. There are many other sellers to more highly recommend than them to deal with, but I'd use them again if they had something I couldn't find elsewhere or it was at a bargain price.

  • Will is not helpful. He is too busy for his--or anyone elses- good. I deal with him because I have to (in the sense that he has what I want and nobody else does), but if there were other places to shop, I would.

Very, very, very slow to ship items - and not very well packaged when you do finally get them. Not sure why anyone runs a business like that - someone mentioned earlier that perhaps he "cannot control the shipping on every item". If that's the case, then hire some help, or sell fewer items to take better care of the customers you have - they won't be repeat customers when they see how their orders are treated. I simply don't bother with his auctions anymore, and after seeing similar experiences in this thread, I see I'm not alone.

Wow, kind of surprised because he has some good feedback. I suppose I wont avoid him completely but only buy from him if I cant find it elsewhere and if I really want it bad enough.

I just have very little interest in being treated like a pest if something goes wrong.

I made my first purchase from him this past week and then this thread pops up. At least I know what to expect now.
  • I have bought from him several times and never had a problem. I won't hesitate to bid on his items in the future.
  • I've purchased many items from him over the last few years. Never had a problem. When I have a question about an item or shipping, I call. I usually get Chris (I think that's his name), who is friendly and helpful. Email is fast, but I prefer to talk to a person when I do business. With email, you lose the sense of the tone of a conversation. Abrupt answers are construed as rude, when a person can actually be very busy and feels that a reply (any reply) is better than no reply.

Received an item that I won on the 23rd of March, never without fail he ships slow. Anyways my problem is with the way he shipped, I paid double for the item to be shipped flat (It was an uncut 2'x3' sheet of cards). I sent an email before my payment and received a short one word email from Will Hays stating that will be done. I also included a captalized and underlined note in the paypal payment stating that I would like this to be done. Well sure enough I get the sheet today and it is rolled up and shipped in a tiny little box that creased it. The sheet only cost me like $3 and total shipping was like $14 so it is not about the money but this guys business philosophy. I mean what a a-hole. I am not even going to return it as it cost so little, but I do want my extra $7 back just because of the principle of it.

I wrote him an email stating politely but firmly that I am disappointed. I quit buying from this guy two years ago because he was an a-hole and I thought he might have changed. I really wanted this sheet for my own personal collection and had not ever seen it before. Anyways I guess this is just a warning to everyone else that he has not changed. Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm still waiting on an auction won on 3/21/07. I sure I will get the item...but would be nice if he was more diligent about his sales and timeliness.
  • zef204zef204 Posts: 4,742 ✭✭
There is no doubt about it that the guy is an a-hole.

Buy from him if you want, but I would gather that sooner or later you will have a bad experience.
