80's OPC Hockey Lot Information Please

I would like some information from some of you more veteran hockey collectors. I live in the hockey hotbed of Oklahoma (yes, that is sarcastic). I would like to buy maybe a monster box (3200 or so) of OPC commons from the 80's for the purpose of starting some raw ungraded sets. I've got a lot of the big rookies (Yzerman, Roy, etc.), but no one around here has any commons to speak of, and I'm not sure where to even start soliciting to buy something like this, nor do I know how much it will cost. I do know that lots this size in football and baseball around here can go for anywhere from $5 to $20, but I also know there's a lot more of this crap out there than OPC hockey! Any help or direction is appreciated, I just know I always get good info or trading partners from this group of guys than anywhere else. Thanks again!

Justin

You could just buy complete sets on ebay and sell the duplicate RCs. That way you don't have a ton of extras when you're done putting sets together.

Or, buy a few sets, cherry-pick the best for your own set, then resell the others as complete sets. As long as your honest about the condition, I think that's the way to go.

    Pokes,
I have a few hundred if you are interested. They are from packs right into a monster box and have been sitting there for 15 years. PM if you are interested. We can work something out and that may get you started. Most are 84-85, but some earlier.

    Thanks
  • I would like one question answered first. What grade cards are you looking for in OPC sets? Most of the OPC cards from 1980 to around 1986 suffer from typical OPC cuts and off-centered cards. I have seen some of the higher grade PSA 9 common cards go somewhat cheap on Ebay in the past few months. So you might want to shop there to start your sets. Instead of sending in cards that may not get the grade you are looking for. I would also email some of the people allready on the set registry to see if they want to sell thier sets of some of thier doubles. But I think if you are looking for 10's than you are in for a big surprize... early 80's OPC cards are quite a challange in PSA 10. But PSA 9's are very common. I have some nice 1982 and 1983 leftovers if you have a list
    Good Luck

  • I really don't want to get graded cards at this time, just raw. As far as condition, as long as they weren't used as coasters or put in the washing machine, I'm okay with it. Most of my key/roookie cards from those sets are probably EX-MT to NM-MT.

I have purchased nice lots of cards from ebay. It is not unusual to find people selling 50 or 100 card lots of a given set (though, not to say there are not auctions with many more cards in the lot). The other thing is to contact dealers in Canada or the northeast. In fact, former Winnipeg Jets goalie Joe Daley has a card shop in Winnipeg (www.joedaleysportscards.com) and may be someone to contact. I've been to his shop a few times and he is a great guy to deal with. He may well have what you're looking for in terms of large lots. Good luck.

    Buy boxes from BBCEX.

Crack them, sell the stars you already have to recoup cost.

Or, search eBay or naxcom for common lots. (cheaper avenue)

    Good luck, Bob C.

    Justin,

I'm pretty sure my friend/consignee could probably put together a monster box for you. He's got a ton of NM-MTish commons from '81-82 through '88-89 OPC, as well as some '80-81 cards. For the '81 through '88 run, you'd probably end up with 3/4 of each set. If you're interested, PM me or e-mail me.
