Hi all new here with grading question

Hi i became a psa member recently. I decided to send my Clemente cards in to be graded. Well i cracked 2 out of original psa slabs both were graded NM7. I was thinking i could possibly get an 8 on both of them they look that good. Well they were logged on 3-8-07 and come this last friday i called and the woman said Thursday and Friday were blacked out cause of show in Chicago. She said Wednsday they would be graded for sure. Monday 3-20-07 they were graded when i got home from work and man was i disapointed. Both of the mentioned cards were given a 6. I sent them in the same condition as they were graded a 7. Did i push things or was there a big rush to get caught up and my cards were under graded? I just feel like crap now is there any advice you all can give, should i try again or give up? Any ways glad to have found this forum its very helpful. Thanks in advance for the help.

Perhaps they really are 6's and you got lucky the first time around?

I think the whole concept of cracking / resubmitting is ridiculous. If you do that and get a different grade, do you really feel good about the grade? If you got them bumped up to an 8, would you really feel that you got a true grade or got lucky? Which grade does the card really deserve?

I wont even get into how cracking / resubmitting screws with the population numbers.

    Welcome and nice pic!

It's possible they were overgraded the first time out, it's even possible that they got a little nick in the holder or when you were putting them into the cs1, and sometimes since grading is so subjective what one grader sees as a 7 another sees as a 6. If it's a nice 6 or a low 7, eye appeal makes the difference.

Maybe scan them when they get back and post pics here, lots of experienced submitters here.

Any chance that you caused any damage, albeit slight, to the cards in the crackout process?
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • only "cracking" I would think would be OK is gooding from one grading service to another.

If you really think about it, but why do we send it to be graded? Because we think it should be a "number". Then we are disappointed because a "pro" gave it a grade lower than we thought. If we were not caught up with the grading system, we would all have raw cards like the "old" days.

Agreed. Wish there was a way to email PSA or whomever a pic of cracked flip so they could update. Hey I dont work much at work, I could volunteer !!

    21Buco- WELCOME !!!

I have read that some resubmit a few times if they feel strongly about a cards grade and usually get it.

Bottom line you took a gamble and lost, and that stinks for sure. I cant say I blame you though, I have thought of doing the same thing. Why not try again? Good luck and welcome to the boards.

Tough break on the crack, but welcome and enjoy the pic in perkdog's sig line!
  • You can certainly send your cracked flips back to PSA, and they will eventually remove them from the Pop Reports and invalidate the cert number.

I have done this before in the past. PSA made good on their word of taking care of the flips.

While I do agree with it screwing up the pop reports, I dont agree with the rest of this.

Grading is an opinion, done by graders, who are people. People miss things and make mistakes. If I have a card that I think should grade higher than the grade it has, you bet your butt its going to be cracked and sent back to be re-graded.

And yes I would feel great about receiving a higher grade than what it was previous image
  • Thanks for the input guys. I should have left them alone but as stated i took the gamble. Oh well. Got another question i got 2 Jordans 1996 UD Ball Park Frank cards. One is 2/5 and the other is 5/5. Anyone know anything about them i cant find nothing on them. Both of them are still in the clear wrapper they came in. Thanks
