Ever Purchase a Foreign Coin even though you have no idea what it is?

I understand it's not a sophisticated way of buying coins, but I landed on this TELETRADE lot and placed a nominal bid and won.

I just thought it looked cool although I couldn't tell you the first thing about what it is. Even though it has issues/problems, I also thought it has neat eye appeal.

Can anyone school me as to what it is?
Thanks!

It is a coin from Ceylon (currently called Sri Lanka) and has a denomination of 1/48 Rixdollar. KM-66 and copper. This is the very scarce 2 parallel lines variety. Krause: $325 in problem free Fine.

I guess this is anything but 'problem free' though...image

I have bought a number of coins and medals that I couldn't readily identify. I still have a few that I have not identified to this day that were purchased many moons ago. As long as the price is right, why not take a chance on it? Especially if it looks interesting to the eye.

In my opinion a steal at that price, regardless of the issues.

Buying "mystery coins" is half the fun of Darkside collecting! That Dutch jeton from 1577 I showed a while back was a mystery purchase just because I thought it looked cool. There are a zillion different designs and themes out there; as long as you're not breaking the bank, why not have some fun sleuthing? image

Whenever I tour the coin shops in town or go to a coin show, I always try to buy at least one mystery coin to look up when I get home. IMO, it's one of the best parts of darkside collecting.

I bought the Soter Megas coin in the link below without knowing what it was at the time.
