    Welcome, how long you been out of the hobby?
  • Thanks;

    I am all over the place, which means I like everything. I am just starting a 1968 Baseball set. I am also 30 cards away from finishing a really nice 1957 baseball set with a friend. Other than that I would like to buy some unopened material but it is so costly and I am no longer solid in my knowledge of prices of unopened materials. I like the idea of these community boards. They seem like they can be helpful.

  • Thank You;

    16 years. My last major purchase was my senior year of higschool when I purchased 6 cases of 1988 Topps as soon as they came out. That should tell you alot about my luck and my insight. I picked up some cards over the years, and have been purchaseing some on ebay the past couple of months. I don't have a clue about anything newer 1993-present. Hopefully I can pick up some info and a couple of good deals through the message boards. I am looking forward to getting involved again.

    Joe- welcome back! I was out of the hobby for almost 25 years, and have been back for 7. Go slow, and read a lot - it'll make collecting more fun and less expensive!

    Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Thanks for the advice;

    I was hoping to find some good books or info on purchasing and selling unopened materials. I don't want to over pay or over charge anyone either. Cards and sets up to the 90's I am o.k with but the PSA grades with the qualifiers or a mystery to me. I often see 9 (oc) for sale and I don't know how to price them accordingly. I will take your advcice and read for a while before I make any big moves;

    Thanks again;

    Welcome, Nolie. I'm only familiar with one book written on unopened stuff, and although it's a bit out of date with pricing, it's a decent resource. Check it out here. As for current pricing, Steve Hart has a good selection and reasonable (a bit high) prices. The biggest concern with unopened stuff is, of course, tampering. The stakes today are higher than ever before, and with buying stuff sight-unseen from the Internet, confidence in the seller is paramount. The 2 websites I linked have excellent reputations for vintage packs, and I'd recommend Dave and Adam's or Charm City for modern boxes. Going back to vintage packs, there are 2 TPGs (third party graders) who authenticate unopened packs. GAI has been doing so for about 5 years, and have done a pretty good job. Recently they've been involved in a couple scandals about authenticating a number of fake packs. PSA (this site) just started authenticating packs a few months ago, but have the best authenticator in the business working for them and reviews so far are great. Don't even think about buying an ungraded pack from a no-name eBay dealer, no matter the price. Finally, feel free to ask specific questions on this board, it's filled with knowledgeable and helpful collectors.

    On qualifiers: 9 (oc) means it WOULD be a 9 if it was not off-center. Rule of thumb is to knock two grades off. So a 9 (oc) would sell for about the same as a 7. There are infinite variations to actual prices, but -2 is a good starting point.

    It's at least a dollar per post in excess of your own, right??
  • Welcome Nolie, from one second time around collector to another. In my opinion its still as fun as when we were kids!

    Have fun with your collection.

    No need to pay those that use apostrophes improperly, though.

    Hi Joe

    Welcome back to the hobby - I was out for quite a few years - have been back now since 1988 or 9.

    Alan took the time to give you some really good resources for unopened material. The reference booklet by the Baseball Card Kid on unopened material is OK - IMO - it could be better considering his experience level - but it's a start - and I do use it from time to time.

    Recommendation - if ya gonna make a buy - ya can always run it by here first - it could say ya a whole lot of money and heartache!

    On the new stuff - there's some activity here - but to be honest the Beckett Board is better for modern stuff.

    I am part of a group who purchase Topps Heritage BB every year - it has the vintage feel with current baseball players. You can do all the trading ya want to complete the set which has a ton of SPs to make it a nice challenge.

    We do have people here who collect other than sports cards that may be of interest. Just check the "Mail Call" thread e.g.

    Well - good luck on finishing your 57T set and starting on the 68T set.

    Don't be a stranger - shoes optional.

    So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

    Nolie,

    Welcome. It sounds like you and me are in the same exact boat. I was out of the game about as long as you and for pretty much the same timeframe too.....I also have no idea what is going on with modern stuff either. These boards should help you tremendously, they've helped me a ton already.

Alan gave me some good info and I will follow up with that. Thanks for the advice and I will run stuff buy if you guys don't mind. Thanks again. I appreciate it.
