dont buy topps baseball cards from dollar general (need advice)

I bought a 36 pack box of 2007 from dollar general for 1.00 a pack I opened every pack to relize that I did not recive one insert card or # 40 jeter card I looked on the packs and their were no odds of inserts. If you go to your local card shop the packs are .99 pack so you would be paying an extra penny but with out the chance of getting inserts. The closest card shop to me is a 4 hr drive I have bougt a few boxes of these cards on ebay and had to pay the extra for shipping. I am thinking about writing to topps and asking the logic in the decision to sell their cards like this. Who thinks I am right in being annoyed or am I just over reacting does anybody think I should write to the topps company advice would be great.

Since I don't collect the inserts, and am paying $2/pack at Target, this would suit me.
However Target is out - and has been for 2 weeks - so I'm SOL.

I'm amazed. When I was a kid I used to buy cards at the local drugstores. Today none of the drugstores in my neighborhood carry cards. I suppose it's no surprise: the young folks really don't care for them.
  • Unfortunately, this is part of the result of all the kids getting blown out of the hobby circa 1991/1992 along with stores/candy distributors remembering being stuck with LOTS of dead product.

As for making something for DG that had no inserts, that IS lame, since Topps and everyone else realizes that new cards are completely driven by inserts - I'd write them a nice letter explaining your disappointment (include the upc from the box, receipt if you have it, etc.)

Personally, I don't buy new product anymore, but I can tell you one of the things in the mid'90's that really ticked me off was getting home with regular sized boxes of Topps/Upper Deck and finding out they had less than 36 packs (with 1/3 to 1/2 of the box taken up with a cardboard insert), with no mention of this on the box.

That blew THIS adult out of the hobby for several years.

its because they flooded the market with CRAP....over produced, low quality garbage. and now its overpriced insert crazy crap.

Wasnt it nice when there were 2 or 3 companies putting out ONE Set a year? For me the perfect year for card collecting was 1987.

some great designs, you could buy topps if you wanted gum! Fleer rack packs for all star cards, donruss had rated rookies... then you picked up an extended set at the end of the year. for the trades and rookies. so much simpler.

Yeah, those were the days. I too am in an area where there are ZERO hobby shops. When I started collecting again (Besides the yearly Topps sets) a few years ago there was one hobby shop only about 15 minutes from my house. I bought a ton of the cheaper, older Topps sets and a huge lot of supplies. The guy who owned the shop was a really nice person and we talked a lot about how much things have changed and how the absolute glut of products really pushed people away. He said that most of his business now was Pokeman stuff and Magic Cards, but even that was drying up. When the landlord of the building he was using raised the rent prices, he just decided to pack everything up and close down. I guess he was barely making enough to keep the place open and didn't want to jack up the prices of all his stuff just to cover his increased cost. That was pretty sad, really, as it was the only card shop in the area.

There is one other card shop within driving distance of me, but I honestly have never seen it open. The business hours are posted on the window/door to the store, and the inside of the store looks like it has a LOT of cards in there, but the guy running the place is never there. I've driven out there NUMEROUS times to see if I could pick some things up, and even though I went during the supposed 'business hours' the store was closed. In the end, I guess it is for the better because as I've done more research I've discovered that the guy who runs the place is a complete and utter dick who takes advantage of people and selling stuff for insane prices.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

The only financial reason to have a storefront these days is for the occasional collection that walks in. Besides that, you can move cards on ebay with relative ease rather than have them sitting in a showcase for 2 years while the sun fades them. Take into consideration the overhead costs, unless you have one of those megaplex stores that has everything and collectors within a 50 mile radius flock to it every day, having a store is pointless. While I do miss the days of going to a shop to pick out cards, I don't miss everything I buy being overpriced, and the typical a-hole mentality of shop owners. If you don't like kids, you're in the wrong business buddy. Go sell watches or something.

The thing I do miss is going to flea markets where 5-10 card dealers used to set up. That's where you could find really great bargains.

I like the idea of packs without inserts for the economics and set building purposes. A very interesting marketing approach. Topps is basically saying that 1/2 its retail price is for covering expenses associated with inserts.

Opening baseball card packs was more about the thrill of the set and players on their own merit. Somewhere along the line it turned into legalized gambling.
    Enjoy your collection!

  • I think it should have been stated on the box no inserts or odds on reciving an insert 0/0

You know it's been a long day when the 5th inning rolls around and the grounds crew goes out and drags the warning track.

My favorite thing about this time capsule post is that 1. It gives advice (don't buy cards from Dollar General) 2. asks for advice (should I write to Topps about not liking what I pull from dollar store packs?)

I wonder if Nick Nolte is the actual user behind the screenname.

He probably could have used this advice 13 years ago...when he made the post.

Actually, the link is a scam. It doesn't take you to a legit dollar general site. The dude is just searching for dollar tree on a bunch of message boards and posting the link as a response.

Hasn't it since been established that Dollar stores do sell Topps cards without any inserts?

WARNING: The name Dollar General is misleading. Everything in that store is not a dollar!!
