1985 Topps Hockey Box

Opened a box of 1985 Topps Hockey over the weekend. Have had the box since 2005 but finally succumbed to the temptation...

Pulled 4 Lemieux rookies, 3 Yzerman 2nd year, and 3 Gretzky.

Here is the box...card scans to follow

Ohh, if anyone is interested in the commons PM me.

  • Boxes with black marks are typically the restock boxes, right? Pretty sweet to pull 4 Lemiuexs out of one box!!!

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
  • Correct, Black marked boxes were returned. Overstock.

Fergie, nice box. Just curious, did you find the Gretzkys and Lemieuxs were together side by side?

Thats how they popped in the hockey rip we did here last fall.

    Thanks, Bob C.

Im not into hockey but I am excited to see the Mario rc. That must have been sweet pulling them! Whats the most a Mario psa 10 has sold for?

Here are two of the Lemieux rookies. The Lemieux and Gretzky are back to back in the packs.

It was pretty cool to pull them, I talked to Steve Hart at the Reading show and he mentioned that a 85 Topps box has 4 or 5 Lemieux rookies on average. Once I heard that I couldn't resist opening my box.

    Great cards! Possibly psa 9's.

Is centering tough for this issue?

What does a box go for now?
  • fergie23fergie23 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭✭
The last two Lemieux rookies. Unfortunately the one on the left was the middle card in the pack and has a thumbnail tear on the middle left edge (every middle card in every pack had this same tear). The one on the right has a wax stain on the back, I wish I could have seen through the back of the pack and seen it was a Lemieux, woulda sent the pack off to be graded by PSA.

I bought my box for $500 and now they seem to be between $550 and $650. I have an 85 OPC hockey box but it is so hard to find centered OPC Lemieux cards that opening it would be a huge waste, you are better off buying 3 PSA 9 85 OPC Lemieux rookies on ebay for what a box costs. I've opened two other boxes of 85 Topps hockey over the years and only gotten one PSA 9 Lemieux out of them.

Overall very happy with the results, Lemieux is my favorite hockey player of all time. I will be purchasing another 85 Topps box from BBCE in a couple months (just bought a 80 Topps Basketball box, 86 Fleer basketball pack and 61/62 Fleer basketball pack so I'm done with buying unopened for a couple months or until I can sell some stuff on ebay image

Why would you torture yourself by having all that great unopened stuff around? By the way, I busted four 86/87 Fleer packs from Steve and the cards were very nice. I think I got four 10s and a lot of 9s, but no Jordan.

I've got a handful of 86-87 Fleer cards that I need to send in to PSA as well. My perfect Jordan rookie ended up having a wrinkle that I didn't notice in my excitement...sigh PSA 5...But there is nothing like opening an 86 Fleer pack and pulling a Jordan except maybe pulling a Wilt from a 61/62 pack (hoping that I have that feeling soon image

I only have a handful of unopened boxes and those stay out at a house I have an hour and a half away which is a long enough drive to stave off temptation, most of the time. This board might actually be the death of my unopened boxes, it is pretty cool to be able to share my pack opening and collecting.
  • Fergie!

    Sweet pulls!!!!!!

I love the 85-86 hockey set. I'm putting a PSA 9 or better set together and would DEFINITELY be interested in any high grade commons. I can even send you a list of those I really need....

I ripped a box myself not too long ago (from BBCE) --- some pretty bad warping on a lot of the cards and only pulled 3 Lemiuex --- sent them to PSA and got 1 nine and 2 eights. The nine's go for $130-160 and the eights go for around $85 -- though I have seen some deviations in those prices.

    What a sweet set!

    Congrats again.

    Hi Fergie,
Welcome to the psa boards. Nice ripping. The first two Lemieux's look sharp and might pull 9's. Congrats! What do the Gretzky's look like? Are they sharp too? I hope you get good grades on them.

    Regards,
    Rich

If you PM me your address I will send you all the commons I got from the box (free of charge) and you can see if you want any of them or want to send any in for grading. I typically throw away my commons unless I see one that looks perfect then I might submit to PSA (I used to keep everything but after about the 20th 5,000 count box I decided to focus on star cards). I normally don't have the patience to sort through all the cards pulling all the potentially high grade ones. I don't own a loupe and find that my naked eye estimates are accurate (ie 9 or 10) about 60% of the time. Not really worth it unless I know the common will sell for a bunch which I don't think they do for 85 Topps Hockey. I just stick with stars, submit and if I get any 8s or 10s I sell them on ebay, keeping the 9s for my collection.

Rich, Two of Gretzky's look good, maybe an elusive 10 which would be sweet. If one of the Lemieux's is a 9 I'll be very happy.

I tend to rip quite a bit of unopened material so I will be posting fairly often. Hopefully it doesn't become too monotonous for those on the board.

Are all of the 1985 commons gone? I use to buy these packs and open them at the bus stop waiting for the school bus.
  • Nascar,

Fergie is hooking me up with the commons --- but what I don't use I'll glad send your way for free. PM me for more details.

  • anyone wanna do an 85 topps hockey rip?

  • JohnnyBro,

    I'm in for that rip!!!!

Boxes run from about $550-650 via BBCE ...

  • he has it listed at 650 a box on his site, so that's 18.20 per pack. But then there is shipping and pay pal fees. Maybe he could give us a better deal? Anyone wanna run it and ask steve?
  • I bought a box from BBCE for $550 --- he was running some ebay deal ... this was about 2 months ago. I imagine (hope) he could give us that price.
