HELP! questions for the modern collectors out there
With exception of a boatload of Paul Pierce cards I bought 5 years ago when the Celtics went to the Eastern Conference Finals, the latest card in my collection is dated 1993, so you can see that I haven't really followed the hobby into it's modern years. Regardless, Al Jefferson is turning into a beast of player (he'll be a 20/10 guy next year), and plays for my beloved Celtics, so I decided I was going to start collecting his cards. I figured I'd start with a search on Beckett for a complete list of his cards....only to find there were 583 cards produced of him in only 3 years!!! Honestly, I have no idea where to start.
I guess my goal is to compile a collection of cards that would eventually become the basis for a Basic Set for the registry. I think it is easy enough to figure out what those cards might be - anything that doesn't say "refractor" or "jersey" or anything other than the brand name. But, given that most of his "base card" rookies book between $5-$10, I feel like I need to expand and start picking up some of the inserts, too.
My questions are these:
1. What is considered Jefferson's "signature" rookie card?
2. Of all the inserts that are out there, which are the ones worth collecting? In other words, which ones are the more sought after inserts?
3. Moreover, in 10-15 years, is anybody going to care about the inserts anymore, or will they go the way of error cards and reverse negatives from back in the day?
sorry for the longwinded message, but this modern stuff is pretty intimidating.
