Removing wax with nylons - not having much luck

I've got a handful of 86 Fleer Basketball Stickers that I want to sub, but need to remove the wax on the back. I understand that nylons will do the trick, so I've spent a couple minutes trying...without much success.

What is the proper technique in doing this? Sticking your hand in the nylon, and using 1 finger to wipe it off? Bunching it up? Quick strokes, or slow?

Does this only work for a card that is pack fresh, or will it remove wax that has been sitting on a card for 20+ years?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Using nylon or a paper towel to remove wax/gum stains only works on the fronts, not the backs.

I was just following the tip located on the PSA 1986 Fleer Sticker Set Registry. I could be wrong, but I don't believe the front of the stickers were ever facing the wax.

Wouldn't that leave a smell that can be detected if someone sends a card in to have graded?

I have removed wax stains from the back of cards before, but it doesn't completely work everytime on the back. I believe that I have successfully done it on the back of a 1986 Fleer sticker. I put my finger in the panty hose and forcibly rub the card with one thickness of the panty hose. Be very careful.

Mr Mint was selling a solvent to remove wax stains years ago - I remember reading it in SCD.

Don't remember what the stuff was called?

I think LMM is right. You must put them on and use your buttocks to remove the wax stains. Just make sure to not leave any new stains. image

Seriously though, I have used the nylon trick on a 86 Fleer sticker myself and had great luck. I used two fingers in the hose, rubbed for a minute and rotated the hose as to not to use the same spot for too long.

Heptane is extremely volatile and evaporates quickly - hence the well ventilated caveat. It doesn't leave anything behind.

I must have not had much patience the first time....works like a charm now. I don't think I was rotating the hose as much before...thanks ted.

  • I use a used dryer sheet. Works like a charm.
Don't use unused ones, however. And get the kind without any scent.
My wife thinks I'm nuts because I always save them after the laundry is done.

I always thought that if you were going to use nylons you should ALWAYS wax first. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
