When I was a kid, my then brother-in-law gave me his baseball card collection.

True story. This was in 1968 when I was 12 years old. It was about 800 cards from the 1950's and 1960's, and he only collected rookies. Many duplicates in the group, including three 1952 Topps Mickey Mantles that, as near as I can remember, were in pretty good shape. Truth is, I didn't give a rat's patoot about cards, so I just tucked them away. In December 1974, I went in the Army and put most of my stuff in storage.

In the summer of 1975, the storage place burned to the ground while I was stationed in Germany.

It occurs to me that if I still had that collection today, I might not have to work as much. image

I actually didn't realize how much it sucked at the time since I really wasn't in to cards. I was more pissed about my Nehru Jacket and my bell bottoms. image

Understood, heck, I'd be PO'd at losing things of value to no one but myself. Still, if no one got hurt or injured, that's something.

    word.. julen has experience.

this is usually the result of some idiot coughing while trying to take a bong hit, a bowl full of burning and ashy weed usually goes flying also..

Well, things could always be worse.................. ummmmm............. oh wait, no. I can't think of anything at this moment that could be worse than losing all your possessions to a fire and then finding out years later that they were worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

I didn't think the "rookie collecting phenomenon" hit the hobby until the early 1980's and your brother-in-law collected nothing but rookies prior to 1968? Wow.....a true visonary

That does not mean that people did not collect rookies before that. I remm calling cards rookies back in the mid 60's. granted I had no idea if they were the first card for someone (I usually gave that name to the trophy cards).

Not surprising to me that someone else collected only rookies back then. many did.

My entire stamp collection burned up in a garage fire while I was in the Army.

Who knows - there might have been a rare British Guiana in there?
