If you were collecting all sports from a single year....

Baseball and Football are pretty straight forward but which set is generally accepted from a certain year for Hockey and Basketball. Say you were collecting 1972, do you include 1971-72 or 1972-73 Hockey and Basketball? Is there a generally recognized standard?

  • For hockey, the first year listed is the "primary year"

    For example:
1985-86 Topps Hockey (with Lemieux RC, #9) is generally viewed as "1985 Topps" hockey.

I believe it is the same in basketball.

In your example below, for 1972, you'd collect the 72-73 hockey and basketball sets.

    Mid to late 50s.

Still sort of affordable, but not terribly common in high-end.

    May have good upside potential.

I think he got it right, too. Although I probably would do it the other way around if it was me personally, his answer is what my experience suggests is the accepted one.

That's one thing I really like about Baseball: it begins and ends in the same calendar year. No confusion. More than once, I've gotten my wires crossed with even knowledgable fans over this. (Talking about Wilt's great Philly championship team and having to say "Sixty six-sixty seven Seventy Sixers" makes me feel like I'm in a Danny Kaye movie.)

I would actually take a calendar year and go with Baseball and Football in that year, and then whatever proportion of hockey and basketball took up more of that year. If 70% of a hockey season took place in one particular year, then that would be the year that would go in the collection. Same with basketball.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
