At what point would you consider just buying anything you want...throw caution into the wind?

Say your an 85 year old guy, and you figure you only have a handful of years left...would you go out and buy all the sets you could afford(and I mean afford down to the bare minimum of living expenses), and just fill your collection in, and die a satisfied man?

You could spend your last few years, money be d a m n e d, and just get some stuff you always wanted. Then when you die, you can have your relatives sell it or keep it.

Would anybody consider doing this?

Consider it! I am doing it.
#LetsGoSwitzerlandThe Man Who Does Not Read Has No Advantage Over the Man Who Cannot Read. The biggest obstacle to progress is a habit of “buying what we want and begging for what we need.”You get the Freedom you fight for and get the Oppression you deserve.
  • That's the point in my life I'd be selling everything so my kids wouldn't be burdened with getting rid of it, or getting ripped off in the process.

The problem with that is that nobody KNOWS when they are
    going to expire.

It is best to not squander too much near the "anticipated end,"
because your schedule on the planet could be extended.

Young folks die, too. We cannot suggest that youngsters squander
all of their money "because they might die any minute."

If you think being young and broke is bad, imagine being very old
    and broke.

If life was fair, that would be absolutely certain.

85-year old healthy folks can easily last another
10-years. I would not want to be broke for those
    extra 10-years.

Also, folks under 30 today, are very likely to live into
a time when medical-science changes the tables
    SUBSTANTIALLY.

    100+ is headed our way in the first-half of this century;
for all first-world countries. The second-half will bring an
    even faster change.

The question in the title is probably more cautionary to
young people than to old folks.

A 40-year old guy thinks he will wait until he is 85
to blow his money on the stuff he wants. Sadly, he
dies in an accident, or from a heart-attack, or from
    cancer before he is 50.

The question makes more sense, - and is easier to
rationally answer - if asked like this:

"If you knew you were dying, would you....?"

That takes the predicting out of the unpredictable.

Then, my answer becomes, "Yes, I would spend the money."

  • Older people often do things they never got a chance to do, and often spend money doing this(like trips). This isn't any different...it is paying for an experience you never had. The good thing about it, is that your heirs could actually get most of that money back when you die.

My kids don't know this, but I am going to personally sell EVERYTHING(well before I am an old man) and use the collectible money so that they can enjoy their lives a bit more. If there is something that they would like to keep instead, then that would be great too. This will give me more enjoyment than anything else.

On old age, boners and Viagra:

When I was young and in my prime,
I could get a piece any ole time.
But now I'm old and I got more sense,
I use the knothole in the fence.
