    87 Topps, I think 40 cents or maybe 45 cents. I remember I got a box with my b-day money $11.

First box of many, don't remember what I got but it led me to a great hobby.

most were .35 and .40 cents. I remember 1988 Fleer coming out and being $1 / pack. I almost flipped! I couldn't afford them. Far Cry from that $800/pack Exquisite stuff now eh? We've sure made it easy for kids.

I know I've been watching and reading the board here lately and pulled out what I had . Now it isn't much and so far not worth a whole helluva lot of anything . imageimage Started thinking I might try to pick up on it again and buy some cards . Bout had a damn moose , it could get expensive quick now days . Most of my CRAP is from late 80's early 90's too . Hell I don't even know who to look for anymore !

    5-cents.

BUT........ There are lots of ways to look at relative costs/values.

    1955 TOPPS - 20 packs for about $1.00

    2007 TOPPS - 20 packs for about $40.00

The 1955 cards were paid for with a silver dollar.

For a short time in 1980, a silver dollar could get
you between $40.00 and $50.00. You could have
    bought 40 or 50 packs.

In 2007, three silver dollars will get you about $40.00.
    You can buy 20 packs.

Often, the price of a product has everything to do with
the perceived value of the money that is being used to
    purchase that product.

Inflation is the friend of every serious investor/collector,
if they understand how debt works to their advantage.

Borrow expensive dollars with a mortgage; buy very
high-end collectibles; pay off the mortgage with the
cheap dollars you extract from the sale of parts of the
    collectible portfolio as time passes.

What silver dollars were in circulation back then? Morgan or Peace? I'm not being facetious, just think it's cool that those coins were still around in change back then.

P.S. The first packs I remember buying were 10 cents (1975).

I remember using most of my paper route money on 1988 Donruss blister packs from Kmart... man I grew up in the WRONG era. I spent most of my childhood money on the cards that are worth the least.

The cards I bought were 10 cents a pack. I remember buying 2 packs at a time to avoid going over that dreaded 25 cent threshold when the 4% sales tax took effect. We would drive the lady at the grocery store crazy ringing up 2 packs 10 times. Of course this was only after we volunteered to carry groceries for people to their cars for a small tip. Now the damn stores hire people to do that for free. There went my career.

In the west, Peace $s were still quite common; due to
    the proximity of Vegas.

And, of course, silver-certs were the currency of the day.

1980. 25 cents, but the place I went to would sell them five for a dollar. I never pulled a Henderson, but my cousin did. I had to dig deep, but he traded it. I still have it. It is surley a PSA 1.

  • I bought plenty of boxes in the mid 50s for a nickel a pack. the boxes had 20 packs and my grandmother would give me a $1 every once in a while to get a box.

this is an unpleasant reminder of how many cards I don't have now.

1960: My lunch money was 35 cents. I could blow off the school lunch, go to the corner drugstore and get 7 packs of cards, or 4 packs of cards and a 7 Up, or 5 packs of cards and a 3 Musketeers, or a 7 Up and a couple of 3 Musketeers.

I remember two things; one may be false. I remember 6 cards to a pack and I remember getting 3 Dick Drotts in a pack once. I know the Drotts happened.

My biggest regret? Tossing all those mint cards with the gum and wrapper in the drugstore dumpster because I already had them.

I started buying packs myself in late 1993-1994. Back in those days I got 41 card 1993 Topps packs w/ five Gold cards for $2. Most "entry level" packs in 1994 were 75 cents for Topps, $1 for Score and Collector's Choice, $1.25 for Fleer, and $1.50 for Donruss. I even remember reading in the Becketts back then how outraged some collectors were at the expense ($25) of 1993 Finest packs.

You know how stories get exaggerated over time. But a nickel or dime back then was still a lot of $.

  • Circa 1977 - 15 cents

Seemed like just about every year after that, they went up a nickel.

Candy bars were always priced the same as a pack of cards, so it was a BRUTAL choice to have to make....
