BUT........ There are lots of ways to look at relative costs/values.
1955 TOPPS - 20 packs for about $1.00
2007 TOPPS - 20 packs for about $40.00
The 1955 cards were paid for with a silver dollar.
For a short time in 1980, a silver dollar could get
you between $40.00 and $50.00. You could have
bought 40 or 50 packs.
In 2007, three silver dollars will get you about $40.00.
You can buy 20 packs.
Often, the price of a product has everything to do with
the perceived value of the money that is being used to
purchase that product.

Cool !!
And you are exactly right , inflation sucks !!
The cards then were probably a heck of alot more evenly dispersed throughout the packs . What I would give to have my dads cards from back in the day .

Inflation is the friend of every serious investor/collector,
if they understand how debt works to their advantage.
Borrow expensive dollars with a mortgage; buy very
high-end collectibles; pay off the mortgage with the
cheap dollars you extract from the sale of parts of the
collectible portfolio as time passes.
What silver dollars were in circulation back then? Morgan or Peace? I'm not being facetious, just think it's cool that those coins were still around in change back then.
P.S. The first packs I remember buying were 10 cents (1975).
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

In the west, Peace $s were still quite common; due to
the proximity of Vegas.
And, of course, silver-certs were the currency of the day.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

I got them free when DAd smoked "Piemonts"

I remember two things; one may be false. I remember 6 cards to a pack and I remember getting 3 Dick Drotts in a pack once. I know the Drotts happened.
My biggest regret? Tossing all those mint cards with the gum and wrapper in the drugstore dumpster because I already had them.

<< <i>Alfonz- I promise you could not get a pack of cards for a nickel in '71- the went up in 1970 to a dime.
Those were the first packs I bought.
You know how stories get exaggerated over time. But a nickel or dime back then was still a lot of $.
Seemed like just about every year after that, they went up a nickel.
Candy bars were always priced the same as a pack of cards, so it was a BRUTAL choice to have to make....
wonder if the Ryan RC went in the front tire or the back tire
