I wasn't really expecting anything great , but that's about the norm. for me . I wished I was about 30 or 40 years older and saved some cards from then !

  • Grim,

Those are not dumb questions at all.

The answer is yes, the prices ended up equaling out with the mass production of those cards. Plus, with a lot of those players now retired, that hurts too.

The second thing is that only those cards that are 'graded' a Gem Mint ten still have value...i.e your Sandberg, Gwynn RC's etc...

The best way to find the true value of those cards is do an ebay search of completed auctions....type in "1983 Sandberg PSA 9". Do that for any card you desire to find the value, and you will get a good idea what you have.

For instance, I saw a 1983 Topps Ripken in a PSA TEN grade went for $91, and a NINE for $10.

A 24 count lot of '83 Topps Reggie's went for $4.26. A PSA 9 went for $4. A couple ungraded went unsold for .99 cents.

It is sad if you are the holder of many of those cards(and paid a lot for them before), and a boon for the person who is just starting to collect those cards. It depends which side of the coin you are on. If you are lucky enough to have dead on centered sharp cards in your sets, then you can make out...but we all know how the centering is when we go back and open the set boxes we had since they came out...

    Actually, I need a 1990 Donruss PSA 9 or 10...
  • Check the population report on any cards you have that might bring PSA 10. If you have star cards that are low pop you may do very well. Timing can play into this if you list on ebay. For some cards you may do much better than you expected, and for others less than you hoped for. The thing is if you already have the card and can gamble the 5.00 for the grading fee then go for it. I collect 82 Topps and sold off some low pop star cards and commons a couple of years ago and things worked out great. The other thing is don't just focus on ebay results as many private sales occur too, directly contacting player/team registry collectors can sometimes lead to sales. This approach can save the time, hassle etc... of listing on ebay and might just get you the price you want-again it depends on demand for the given card. Good luck!

    First time poster...

Anyways, it's funny that you just mentioned that 1983 Topps Ripken in PSA 10. That was my card and I just sold it. It didn't fit into my collection. Actually I sent in a bunch of early 1980's cards and I was pleasantly surprised to see that one come back in a 10. So to answer the original posters question, if you have a star or semi-star and it looks close to perfect, send it in and take a chance.

Seeing that 10 listed in the PSA e-mail notification gave me some happy moments in my life.

    Collecting:

    - Post War baseball HOF RC's
    - 1980's unopened baseball
    - All Mutoscope and American Beauties

  • jjworm, cool coincidence! I checked some raw '83 topps Ripkens, and those actually still sell for a handful of dollars. I had thought they were much lower now. In '99-'00 those were still very hot...including the Donruss and Fleer '83's too!
