I want to hear what you guys think it could be. After 1970.
My guess: 1996 Select Certified Interleague Preview SAMPLES
I believe that this card is the First 1/1 ever made. Even pre-dating the 1997 Pinnacle Press Plate Preview.
So rare, beckett doesn't even know they exist!
Here's some scans of the regular and Sample version: ("SAMPLE" is written on Williams' Hand on the bottom card)
Side to side (Notice the PSA label:
And now the back. "SAMPLE" Is written across the back of the one on the right!
Remember the card above is only a representation of what card ISSUE is rare, not that the ACTUAL card is the rarest one since 1970.
So now it's you guy's turn!

The card is mentioned in the Standard Catalog of BB Cards but they don't reference the card as 1/1.
What would be the source of the card is it's a 1/1?
There may be more than one I'm affraid?

Was it Pinnacle?
Was it Flair?
Was it Select Certified?
Was it ScoreBoard?
(Did I just say Scoreboard? Hope Ken Goldin Doesn't sue me.)
Keep in mind that the 1997 Pinnacle press plate preview production is listed on the back of the Metal masterpieces and it says "12/20/96"
And now the Back:
That means Pinnacle made thier Press Plate Previews in 1996!
I think that the Select Certified Interleague preview SAMPLE set is a 1/1 set and it was obviously released about midway in the 1996 year.
Can you believe that Pinnacle worked their factory employees during Christmas season?!?
That Sucks!
<< <i>Guaranteed Scarce! >>
Interesting way to express it?
I'll say it is - if there's only one - there is NO supply.
My guess is 1/1's don't have the "demand" people might think - there's only one and it doesn't get a bunch of people excited.
Like the T206 Wagner - it's rare AND scarce since the demand is greater than the supply.
Sorry - just a little semantic thinking?
mike
BUUUUT! man look at the scans!
These Press plate preview cards were inserted into Factory Cases.
The regular 1997 New Pinnacle Press Plates were inserted into Packs.
Can these be considered in the same category as "Art Work" since there are only one of them made?
Where's the nearest rich guy at who can answer this question?
PS. man I'm getting pretty tossed.
It's like the comic art I collect - they're pen and ink - simple - almost stick figured - but affordable and "supposed" to be 1/1 - COA'ed by Topps.

Post up some pics of it!!
That would be cool!!

Good luck!!

I just Bid on it!!

To be honest - there's very small interest in them here.
I always post them in the "Mail" thread - in fact - I just posted one today that I picked up from Mike Gidwitz who used to own the PSA 8 Wagner.
He also gave me a decal that I'm clueless about.

Oddly enough, there are an infinite number of these cards.
As far as what you're actually asking, all I can think of that would qualify would be Topps #7 cards in the regular set for some time.
There are also some cards that are on sell sheets and initial checklists that end up being replaced. Especially true with Bowman prospects.
The two obvious cards I thought of right away as far as being rare are the full Gordon cards that "slipped" into Topps packs last year and the NNOF Thomas cards. Both are pretty rare, no?
I have this weird feeling that Topps did make a 1992 AROD Card, couldn't ship them out because of legal issues, and now they are in SOME VAULT SOMEWHERE?

"A-Rod Named Topps Spokesperson: The Topps Company recently announced that Alex Rodriguez has been named as the first-ever official spokesperson for its baseball card line. The deal also grants Topps exclusive rights within the MLB trading card category for autographed baseball cards, game-used memorabilia cards and the use of Rodriguez’s image on packaging and advertising.
The card company and superstar Yankees player have obviously come a long way. Although other MLB-licensed companies issued A-Rod rookie cards in 1994, Topps was unable to produce a regular-issue card of the emerging superstar until its 1998 Topps set, when he was added as card number 504 in the 503-card set (which had no card number 7). Rodriguez was reportedly left out of Topps sets during the first four years of his career due to a dispute between Topps and his agent."
<< <i>I would say the rarest of any card post-1970 is a tie between every card that is numbered 1/1.

The problem with 1/1's they are not necessarily truly 1/1. I remember reading about that Brunell super collector over at another board finding an ebay auction for some Fleer Brunell 1/1 that he already owned. Come to find out their were 2 1/1's of that card,, among others. Apparently Fleer made a lot of back-ups of 1/1's in case the card was damaged. When Fleer went bankrupt a lot of those back-up cards were released to satisfy the redemption card claims against them.

As a warning - there is a 1993 Finest of McGwire on eBay right now that is listed as a "Refractor" but is not. A member here (mcgwiremuseum) recently won it on eBay and we discussed the fact that it is NOT a refractor and he luckily saved $250. It is now relisted (again as a "Refractor" when it is not) on eBay:
NEW mislisted McGwire
old frauldulent mcgwire
I've contacted the seller, who obviously knows it is NOT a refractor and is trying to take advantage of an unsuspecting buyer...
He knows it isn't.
He is lying in order to real in some stupid noobie.
I see he has a catch already.
Jay, couldn't you tell that teh card wasn't a refractor.
The green areas of the card have to show a rainbow glow.
Well, I'm glad you got your money back.
Can someone knock his auction off through ebay security?
I want to but I WILL result to verbal intimidation in order to do it.
I just am not in the mood right to do that.
You two need to get a room...

Awesome post. (I would take the time to reply a response regarding the irony of your post, but I'm SO glad you did...)
