china panda plastic pouch contains PVC?

ebay panda seller claims that outer plastic pouch contains PVC.

Does anybody know if this is true? If it is true, will it damage the silver panda even though the coin is still inside the capsule?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if it is true or not, but if the coin stays sealed in its capsule, PVC from the pouch shouldn't affect it. Generally PVC plastic must physically touch the metal to contaminate it.

  • The outer pouch on 2005 and earlier silver pandas indeed contains PVC. Roy is correct in the fact that the PVC would need to come in direct contact with the coin to do any real damage. For the most part, the coin is protected by the plastic capsule inside the PVC pouch. However, I have seen some older silver pandas (1997 I believe) with some minor PVC haze on the mirror surfaces (the coins were still doubled sealed - capsule and pouch). I assume these particular capsules may have been loose fitting and/or improperly stored in a hot environment, allowing the harmful PVC gas to react with the coins.

The PVC pouches went away in 2006 and 2007 with the coins shrink wrapped in form fitting plastic trays - 15 coin round "wheels" in 2006 and 30 coin rectangular trays in 2007.

    silvereaglecoins and satootoko,

    Thanks for the info.

How about gold panda? Can PVC contaminate gold coins?

I do not think gold is reactive to PVC. That may be the reason why China only packages them in the soft plastic pouch.

Well, it shouldn't be reactive to pure .9999 gold, but any copper amounts or other base metal impurities could cause a reaction.

  • I have seen gold Panda coins with a light haze in the fields that probably comes from PVC in the older pouches.

I always remove my gold pandas from the soft plastic mint packaging. I rinse them in acetone and put them in saflips until I get a set then I slab the group of five. PVC is a plague - I recommend to go with mylar flips. PVC haze is ugly even if it doesn't react with gold.
