What's up with Prototype cards?? Link included.

I've been watching an auction for a 1992 Fleer Pre-production Kirby Puckett card (see eBaby auction).

Other than perhaps having a hard-to-get card graded, should something like this be added to a Set Registry? If so, guess I'll never complete a Master set! Or is there a specialty-kind of collector for these items??

Just curious...

  • Cool card. Unsure of its rarity. The 92 Fleer Pre Production Football ones on ebay stores are $10-35.

Wow! What a disparity! This pucket up to $306. I'll have to keep an eye out to see how many more "pop" up after this auction...

    Thanks for the info!

I see that coins isn't the only place where sellers keyword spam.

I assume you guys also have fly-by-night crap grading companies?

This card is listed in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards 2007 edition at $400, with no picture. The editors of the book have never seen one in 14 years.

Always like the design of the 92 Fleers, that kind of looks cool in that color format.

There are an estimated 100 of this sample card - they were given out at the 1991 FanFest show.

The card differs from the issued Puckett in the card number, missing 1991 stats and the overprinted "sample card" notice on the back.

Card #123 in the 92F set is Joel Skinner.

The 07 Standard Catalog has it booking at 400$.

No reference is made to a "rare" color variation Promo.

I was a dealer for about 15 years and I stopped around 1993. I used to see a few of these around (green ones) when I was dealing and the asking price was typically $100-$200. I have seen them change hands but never bought/sold one. I saw the auction list at $75 opening bid and I thought that was a high price for a raw copy in todays market.

I would think gradable copies, in raw, on eBay are unlikely. You know well enough that if it was mint it would be graded. If it is offered as "great" it is likely Ex or ExMt.

The guy's feedback does not suggest he deals in Pucketts or rare cards, his last 5 items were jewelry and dolls so not sure what that says about the likelyhood of an authentic card. I can't remember purple version(s) floating around but when stuff starts walking out the back door, as reported, you never can know the production numbers. In any case, if it is a 1/1 (not saying it is) PSA will not grade it anyway as it would not have comparison piece to match color, right? So $300 for a off color copy of a sampe card...I could prob make such a thing with a little photo shop help if you have the $300...lol.

A major show like TwinsFest or the like might be your best chance to pick up a nice green copy. Also, Chicago Sun Times show may turn one up as it's Puck's hometown.

Just because it's not graded doesn't mean it's automatically fake, or a poor quality card. There are many, MANY, people such as myself who don't give a rat's a$$ about grading and won't pay all that money for grading. There are still a great number of collectors who may have valuable cards who aren't a member of the grading companies and therefore have no idea how to submit a card for grading. (Typically you have to pay an exorbinant fee and wait forever which is something many people don't have the patience for).

Unless you sell cards for a living, the common man has no idea how to go and get a card graded. Therefore, E-Bay becomes a much easier market.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

Thanks for all the additional info! There's a lot more to these cards than I ever realized.

Clayshooter, sorry about nabbing those two (strictly-psagems') PSA10 Pucketts from you last night. You've got some lofty goals getting 10s in every card! Are you bidding on the '83Fritsch auction ending in 3 hours? I started the bidding knowing my $110 bid wasn't going to last long -- it didn't! (SMR is over $400, I believe.) I'm happy with my PSA9 which I subbed a year or two ago.
