Interesting Offer

I recently recieved a second chance eBay offer after having a bidding war on a card with this guy that now isn't buying the card. It seems like a shill bidder and a attempt to sell to me at my highest bid. What does this sound like to you?

About 24 hours before the auction ends I'm winning at $9.99

Sometime in the 24 hours prvious to closing this guy jumps in with a big bid of who knows how much?

With 5 mins to go, I bid $15, 20, 25, 30, finally last bid at 36. All of my bids are below this "guy."

At this point, no big deal. I figure I lost a $50 card to a guy that wanted it more.

Now, 12 hours later I get a second chance offer for my high bid of $36?

If this other bidder's bid is thrown out I would have won the auction at $9.99.

Sounds like a scam to me, you? If the guy really was a NPB wouldn't you need a week or so for him to "forget" to mail or paypal? This just smells like an attempt to see how high I would bid and second chance offering it to me for the highest offer. In the heat of the moment I would have paid $36 but now I've bought other items and am left wondering what this guy is up to. I've been buying/selling as a dealer for over 15 years (although not much in the last 5 years) but only on Ebay for about two. Any thoughts?

Typically, if it smells like a rat....

  • Offer $10 + s/h.. If he sells great if not his loss.

Unless this was a great deal or you really wanted the card, I would not budge on the amount!image

    mike,
unless its a unique card, the seller may have had 2 of the same cards. but on the other hand, your instincts may be correct regarding the shill to see just how much you would pay.

    Anybody heard of "Familydiscount0"?

I know I was overpaying at $36 (book is $50) but I have a nephew who loves the hometown kid, Joe Mauer, and was going to get this gold refractor for him. I have to overpay now for Joe after the batting title.

I guess I wouldn't be bent otta shape to lose it so I emailed him for "entire bidding history" and I'll use it to see if I can make my point. If he sees where I'm going he'll just relist, I'm sure.

Winning bidder's history doesn't look suspicious.

The new auction has the same BGS # / subgrades so it is the same card - not sure what that's all about

Yeah, it didn't seem suspicious at all while I was bidding. There must be bids cancelled as I bid like 5-6 times myself. The feed back seemed on the up and up too.

I think I'll make an offer and just see what happens.

If anyone has had good/bad exper with this eBayer, please let me know. Thanks.

  • Is it me or would removing ALL of the high bidder's bids from the whole auction (as though they never participated in the bidding) solve all problems with possible shillers and second chance offers?

    Always made sense to me.
