Football cards Gaining Market Share

At that pace, football cards will overtake baseball cards in market share in just 2 more years.

Anyone who's been buying football for any amount of time, particularly PSA graded, already knew this by what the market has been doing the past couple of years. IMO, its only a matter of time..Football is just crushing the other sports in popularity only makes sense the card market will follow.

Any other opinions on this?

I haven't read the article but I completely agree with your thoughts. Vintage football is coming on strong... '55 TAAs are up 50% - 100%+ from last year image

I've always wondered what the production numbers were. Anyone have an idea? Could compare the numbers with baseball's...
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Agreed! I only have football cards. Well, except for a McGwire Olympic card and a Griffey UD rookie. Can't wait for the vintage to run force.

for new cards probably will continue to trend this way at least from what we see now. the sport is more popular than baseball especially
for today's younger generation. not sure if this will be the case for years to come but it might be.

as far as vintage cards football will never be more popular or a better seller overall than baseball. baseball's roots are long as the nation's
past time. names like ruth, cobb, mantle, mays, and aaron are tough to overcome with names like grange, the four horsemen (whoever
they are....), namath, starr, or unitias.....great football players for sure but the others are etched in america's history and growth through
    the twentieth century....

    just my opinion.

I have raw sets from the 50's and 60's. The cards would grade anywhere from 5-7's with a few 8's I am sure. Is it profitable to grade the commons if they are going to come back 6 or 7? If I grade them I would do it for profit and not to keep.

i can't believe how much the 55 all americans have gone up. i have completed the set and wasn't paying much attention for a while. well i started looking again in order to upgrade some 6's to 7's, and i can't believe the price jump on ebay, let alone other more expensive avenues. i guess that's good for my set but i wish i had started upgrading about 6-8 months ago. i think vintage football and to an extent basketball will start getting a lot more popular as people notice this trend and how realtively cheap they are.
    just my 2 cents

As far as 56 Topps (what I am collecting right now), PSA6s would probably not be worth your time. PSA7s are hit and miss.
You are probably better off selling raw.

The other nice thing about vintage football is they are about 1/2 the number per set versus baseball.

I agree as well. I have collected 40's and 50's football for almost 20 years...and I have not seen a period of growth like the past 6 months to a year. I look back at what I was buying graded cards for a year ago...and compared to now, the prices are often skyrocketing...which is obviously good and bad for my addiction! The puzzling thing to me is when I look at Beckett price guide, the price of vintage football never seems to change..yet on ebay I KNOW that most vintage football has gone up substantially.

Same with the SMR...Many of the SMR prices are the same as they were 3 years ago...Which isn't even in the hemisphere of being in line with reality.

The only problem with Football is that the cards can't go back as far as Baseball so there will never be a T set but you do have a nice Goudey type set. I collect more football now than baseball because of the value. I can pick up HOF RCs of the 60s and 70's still pretty cheap compared to Baseball RCs. Smaller set runs means actually finishing a set is possible. Also certain teams are getting to be cannonized like the 20's Yanks or 70s Reds (70s Steelers, 90s 49ers or Cowboys) so team collectors are coming out of the woodwork.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

I guess my question is then...WHY isn't SMR and Beckett reflecting these changes? I have had a subscription to Beckett for years...which I think I may be ending because their vintage coverage stinks (to put it gently)...I don't think I have seen a vintage football price change in 5 years. With computer technology and the web...I woiuld think that it would not be that difficult to analyze prices better. Just review ebay items sold for a month...that will give a pretty accurate reflection of what a card is really worth.
