What to buy???

I'm new to collecting and focused on vintage stuff the past 2 years.

I'd like to mess around a little with new cards but have no idea what's best to buy. I looked at the
local card shop and at card shows and see what seems to be 100's of different kinds of cards.
I never buy any because I have no idea what to get.

I know I'm going to hear a lot of "buy what you like". The problem is I'd have to buy several packs of
everything before I'd figure that out.

I'd rather buy something with the chance of getting something rare (if there is such a thing for newer cards)
and won't mind spending extra for it.

Thanks.

Dan

The problem with what you want is that all the companies are putting out "rare" cards in their packs. It seems that you can find 1 of 1 print plates in almost every type of pack they put out. Rare today is not what it used to be.

That being said, Topps Sterling, Topps Triple Threads and Upper Deck Ultimate Collection are all high dollar packs with the chance to pull "rare" cards. There are many more out there, those are just what came off the top of my head. I hope that helps.
    Looking for Carl Willey items.
  • Thanks guys. I'll start with your recommendations!!

You can't go wrong with Topps. They are timeless. As far as value......pry not the best.

Topps chrome is always a challenge to do.

If you like rookies and stuff that is fun to hold on to and look through 5 years from now Bowman or Bowman chrome is the way to go IMO.

Topps heritage is fun and challenging to put together. It has the design of the old school sets (currently 1958) and you have a chance to pull some great autographs and game used stuff (see THE OFFICIAL Topps heritage thread)

I don't mess with the high dollar stuff, but there are lots of great cards with game used memorbilia on them and autographs on them.

I do a Topps set every year (usually a factory and a partial hand collated) and Topps Heritage baseball. I got into Topps Chrome football and started on a Topps chrome baseball too.

It depends on what you like.....a challenge, rare cards, classic sets, or the super rare.
