<< <i>I still think some of these "errors" were intentional, in order to create interest in these coins. >>
Actually it was lazy employees of the government not following protocol. >>
Either way, this is a great way to create buzz for the coins and give them their best shot at circulation. Between the Prez and the Sacs, aren't they going to punch out nearly 1.5 billion dollars this year alone?? Someone correct me.
Remember, most citizens in the U.S. have no interest/concern for even looking for these errors. Fred is correct about unintentional. You have a process to make thousands of these an hour - it has to be difficult and monotonous to find but one error.
I do not think it is some conspiracy to creat interest in the coins. I think they were created more for creativity in coinage than circulation expectations. Again, if the U.S. REALLY wanted us to use these things, they would stop the printing of the paper dollars completely.
<< <i>If they slab those things, the lettering will be obscured by the pastic so what's the point? >>
Incorrect. They use a special slab for these.

That's a first for me, seeing the NGC slab link. It's interesting they haven't done the same for the 17th century coinage that bear edge lettering. At least I've never seen them slabbed this way. First coin that comes out with an edge lettering error they accomondate a holder for it.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
"Leo, that NGC slab has been around for at least three years. It was not created special for the president dollars or the error President dollars. Once again though it was a product they didn't advertise and you had to request it. They also only had one size holder. It was designed to hold the High relief 1907 double eagle but would also hold bust half dollars. They DID create a new center insert with a smaller opening for the dollar coin though. But it was planned once the dollar was approved over a year ago."

This auction is for a blank planchet without the edge lettering... how could you distinguish it from a blank Sac planchet? >>
That auction is a load of crap.
