Post a 1952 or Later Card You Think is a Work of Art

Many of the older cards could be considered miniture works of art but what about the modern era, where most cards are actual photographs? Post a card you think is a work of art and tell us why you think so.

When you talk about Art and sportscards, you have to bring up the 1911 Mecca Double folders....Not only were these cards one of the first issues to have STATS on the back, they were innovative in design, featuring 2 players on each card, and utlized both sides of the cardboard for imagery...

before this issue, most cards were made by pasting an image to the back of an advertisement piece...thus the variations in the 1909 T206 set...Most cards before this were made with no concern about the reverse of the card...Each "purchaser" of the image would apply their own backing (with associated advertisement)....

the Library of Congress defines a cigarette card as "a 19th Century mounted Photograph.." so even though the T201 was found inside Mecca Cigartettes (Brand of American Tobacco Company made to compete with new Turkish Imported cigarettes), it is not a TRUE tobacco card...it is in fact , a work of art!

The cards were made using the New technology for the time, Color Half Tone Relief, which used small dots of the primary colors (and black), in different amounts, to create color images reminiscent of Water Color Paintings...Not only did the front of the card have a color halftone image, but for the first time the reverse of the card had an image that was engineered to share the same legs when folded...In addition, full stats were provided that included each players hitting AND fielding stats (Pitchers had pitching and hitting stats)....

These cards are mistaken for Lithographs, when in fact they are not...Lithographs are created using flat printing screens that rely on oil and water not mixing...The Mecca Double folders are Color halftone Reliefs that use raised screens that rely on differing amounts of colored ink for the effect of different colors...

Also the oversize aspect of these cards give them more of an "artsy" feel than a baseball card feel.....Since only 50 cards comprise the set, the T201 is a very attainable and artistic Pre-war set for collectors to enjoy!
