1977/78 Topps basketball rip.........

I saw Steve Hart put two boxes of this stuff up on his website a week ago. Since I'd never seen an unopened box of '77 BK before and in my mind they are scarce, I snatched up both boxes right away. Like I did with the 75 FB rack box, I'm going to bust some and sell some to offset the cost of the packs I'm ripping. Here's what I got out of the first three packs:

Centering is all over the place, and there are some snow issues on some cards, but overall I'm happy with the quality. Corners are razor sharp and I was pleased to see they are the 77s that were printed on the white card stock with the bright green backs and not the dull card stock with the greyish backs (they made both in 77). This set is very colorful and with only 132, you get at least a star in each pack which is good. Packs will be $20 delivered for anybody interested. If not, I'll put them up on ebay.

  • Wanna play heads up for a box? LOL.

Mind if I ask what you paid per box?

How many packs you going to sell?

The box was a little less than $500. I'm going to do the math and figure out how many packs I can open and break even. The last pack that was on ebay sold for $22.

'77 Basketball is definitely a fun rip with lot's of stars and some decent rookies. Plus the card design is pretty cool too. Snow and centering can be a problem though.

I don't think the wax is rare from this year however. I've seen plenty of boxes over the years and have opened a few too. I have one sitting here unopened right now. Of course it's buried. If I could see it, it would be an opened wax box by now.

From the 1970's, the wax you don't see very often is first series 1970 tallboys, 1971 Basketball and to some extent '73 and '75. Those seem to be the harder to find years in hoops wax. Fritsch has a huge supply of '72 Topps wax too.

    Have a good rip!

Like I said, in my mind it's scarce since I haven't seen it. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean it's hard to find, but I was excited to see it available at a reasonable price. Fun set too. I mean Parish, Dantley and Dawkins RCs- can you come up with a set that has 3 more underrated RCs?

LMK if you get serious about this set, Lee, as I believe I have some well centered commons and semi stars kicking around here that I'd be willing to throw in as part of a trade/cash deal for that '70 PSA 9 Hebner.

Boo, for the 20th time- the 70 Hebner PSA 9 is not for sale. I realize you want it bad, but I can't let it go right now. Thanks for the interest though.

That's cool, just keep in the back of your mind. Also, I actually found that centered Kirk Willoughby RC we were discussing via PM (It was actually behind my OC one in 9 pocket sheet I keep the set in!). Anyway, I'm keeping it right now as an upgrade, but if the '70 Hebner ever becomes available, well, then we can do some talkin'. image

Jesus, the Willoughby is a low pop card in any hi grade. If you can get an 8 on that, the Hebner's yours. I'll even throw in a 6-pack of St. James Ale.

NOW we're making inroads. I'm putting together a sub right now (can't submit the Willoughby for the March special, though, since it's 'baseball only') for the $13/5, and if I have a couple more glasses of V.O. tonight I might persuade myself to toss the Willoughby in there for the purposes of trade, thereby corrupting the quality my personal set. I'll keep you posted.
  • I love that set...love the design, player selection, the wrappers, everything.

I think they were the first 70's basketball cards I ripped as a kid, in 89/90. Alot of good memories.

Decided to rip a pack out of the 2nd box to see how centering compared to the first box. You decide-

    Not a bad pack player-wise.

ps- lucky for whoever bought packs from me, I was a little slow in getting them out. You'll be getting packs from the box with good centering. Will go out first thing tomorrow- I promise.

Lee - Did you pull any Erving's (i figure since no scans that the answer is "no")??

i'd be interested, if you intended to sell one.

I can't speak to wax or the set in general, but as I try to complete my Basic Erving Set, the '77 has been the hardest to locate....very few 8's or 9's have been listed in the last 3-4 weeks.
  • That Parrish looks awesome, its tough to find centered and without that annoying print line running down the lower right side of the card.

    Looks like a 9.
  • Those pics bring tears to my eyes. That was the first year I began collection. Sure wish I would've taken better care of them.

jdip, sorry no Dr. J yet. Maybe one of the other guys buying these will pull one, or you could try your luck for 20 bucks. Of course, you could probably buy an 8 for that if it came up on ebay.

I still haven't decided how many I'm going to rip yet, but I'd like to do enough to get a set. Only 132 cards so it shouldn't take more than a half box.

I hope you leave the other wax box unopened. For all you know, it could be the very last one that exists.

I don't know squat about cards, but those damned sure bring back some memories of my heros from my highschool hoops days! Add Pistol Pete, and you'd pretty much have them all covered!

I meant to tell you gus, you can remove the wax on the top card and the little bit of gum crust from the bottom card with a piece of dryer sheet with relative ease.

  • Got my two packs. Didn't get much in the first pack but the second pack yielded these three back to back to back:

Wow shambo, doesn't look like your Kareem and Barry have the centering and snow issues mine do. Nice Frazier too. This is the first pack I've seen that had Kareem and not Parish too. Good luck on grading those stars- I'd also grade any commons you think have a shot at a 10. I'm tempted to open the last bunch of packs I have left.
