Gary Carter website and an OPC question

I just checked out a fellow member's website, and it's pretty cool.

One thing caught my eye, though...the 1977 Topps and O-Pee-Chee cards use different pictures. Is that common? Is it because he was on a Canadian team?

Topps..........................................O-Pee-Chee

I like the OPC picture better, but I'm not sure anyone cares...

I do not have any info on the rest of the Expos cards in 77. I agree the O-Pee-Chee card is one of my favorites. Thanks for the kind words.

often, the OPC cards of the Expos & Jays would differ (front picture-wise) from the rest of the set

If they weren't earlier, they are now.
  • Yes, the editors at OPC did decide to change some pictures, airbrush some hats (due to trades) and re-crop some poses.
Here is only a partial list of differences...

Bill Madlock (different picture with San Fran Airbrushed cap)
Bobby Mercer (different picture with Cubs airbrushed cap)
Dan Warthen (different Picture with longer hair (headshot)
    Rico Carty (with cleveland hat)
Woodie Fryman (headshot with Reds airbrushed cap)
Tony Perez (expos uniform, batting stance)
Richie Zisk (same pose as Topps, but closer cropped and airbrushed White Sox cap)
Pedro Garcia (different pose with Blue Jays cap on, not airbrushed)
Marty Perez (close crop headshot with airbrushed yankees photo)
Graig Nettles (closer cropped head shot)
Ricky Monday (different pose, headshot with airbrushed Dodgers cap)
Manny Sanguillen (differnt pose with airbrushed As Hat (no helmet))
John Montefusco (close cropped pose with crop just below glove finger)
Ben Oglivie (closer cropped photo through Detroit on uniform)
Brian Downing (closer cropped photo through middle of top hand on bat)
    Gary Carter (different pose)

  • I haven't seen a definitive list, which is why I'm sort of dabbling myself, trying to come up with one.

I have 4 Topps proof cards from that year which use the same picture as the OPC card, where it was markedly different from the Topps card's picture. Joe Ferguson (different teams) is one of them. I'll look up the other 3.

I'm pretty sure the Blue Jays and Mariners all got real photos of the players in their new uniforms, rather than airbrush jobs.

    Much cooler.

The Nolan Ryan card is cropped a bit closer, too.
