Do you prefer to put nine or eighteen cards (back to back) in nine pocket pages?

I personally insist on having all my sets in binder/pages, and I have always prefered having only nine cards (one per pocket) in a page. This way, I can see both the front and back sides without having to take any of the cards out and it doesn't "stretch" the pockets. Of course, others prefer to do eighteen cards in page (put two cards back to back in each pocket) although you have to be really careful inserting the cards so you don't get dinged/feathered corners and of course, no chance of seeing the reverse without taking the cards out.

So what's your preference?

9 all the way. When sheets were more a premium and I was a kid, 18 was the only way to go.

I am cheap so it's 18 all the way. You have to be careful but I found I ding way more cards putting in the first card as sometimes the sheet pockets aren't cut perfectly.

I put in 45 (five in each slot), just because I can save a penny or two on pages.

Plus, I only use the PVC pages from the 1980s -- so when I take them out, the two outside cards are ruined, but the three in the middle...A-OK

I focus my collection on Gary Carter cards. I am attempting to get 9 of each card so that a whole page in a binder would be dedicated to a specific card.

My 8 year old son, however, believes that 4 or more in a given pocket is the way to go -- so at any one time on a page he will have close to 40 cards.

They're designed for 1 card, and jamming more than that in a slot will damage your corners. I also use Ultra Pro Platinum penny sleeves, which fit nicely in the 9 pocket pages and provide extra protection.

Only 9 in a page. I pay the extra premium, but I use the Ultra-Pro Platinum pages whenever I can find a case of them for a good price. (I've found that if you buy them in bulk they are much cheaper than if you purchase smaller quantities). By having only 9 in a page you can see both sides and the pages don't get stretched out and ruined.

it use to be 18 back in the day when sheets were more expensive and I had less of a budget. The old enor pages were also easier to get 18 cards in a page. now however its only 9 in the ultra-pro plat's with penny savers on most of the cards. Once I am done with my basement work (which will probably be a year) I play on reworking all of my old sets. I will do one at a time. Make a list of cards that need upgrading and move them into better sheets. Then they will be at 9 a page as well.

I have 2 different parts to my collection. I have complete sets of Topps from 1975 (my birth year) to present. Then, I have my Cardinals team sets. My Cardinals team sets are seperated by decade and brand, so the albums are at about half capacity as far as how many pages will fit, so I only put 9 to a page where I can see the backs. That is my preference.

My sets are a different story. First of all, I have the older type of baseball card album. They were popular in the 80's. They are in "like new" condition, but they are old. They are the albums that hold about 2/3's the amount of pages that the newer albums hold. Since they won't hold enough pages to fit a set with only 9 to a page, I put 18 to a page for my sets. I would love to have them at 9 to a page, but I don't have much of a choice unless I decide to go out and buy over 30 albums. Plus, I like uniformity, and all of my albums for my sets are exactly the same. I didn't even have to buy them. They came in a collection I bought a couple of years ago.

I also stick 4 in each pocket, however, I prefer to fold the cards in half and set them in side-by side. That way, I know what cards are in each pocket and I don't have to pull out the top cards and risk damaging them just to see who's underneath.

    9 as well.
  • "trying to pull a mint card out of a 18-card sleeve is like diffusing a bomb!"

Total agreement. I have bought some nice sets from others and screwed up key cards just getting them out of the pages.

Unfortunately, 9 to a sheet those monster 792 card sets won't fit in a 3-inch binder, so many people put them in 'back to back'.

Collecting my sports heroes, Roger Staubach and Kirby Puckett.
  • I put 9 per page, not just because it protects the cards better, but also because I rarely put a complete set in an album all at once. So if I'm adding cards to the pages I need to see the numbers on the back to know where I'm at.

1 card per pocket. That's the only way you can see how nice the corners and edges are.

Actually they do. Just carefully put some heavy books on top of the page stack and that'll "suck the air" out of the pages. Perfect for those 1980s/early 1990s Topps sets.

Indeed, Topps sets are like that. I wonder if I should go so far as to make a print out of the final standings and playoff results that year along with key historical/pop culture sort of events for that year.
