PCGS Bust Half Dollar variety attribution, new and old labels

mozinmozin Posts: 8,755 ✭✭✭
I understand that PCGS now will charge $15 each to list the Overton variety on the label. What I don't understand, is how PCGS will handle varieties they have been listing on their labels at no extra charge.

If one looks at the PCGS Price Guide, there are many Bust Half varieties listed there separately. This is not new, and I believe the PCGS holder labels have been printed using the same descriptions. Please correct me if I am mistaken on this.

A good example is the 1807 year, where PCGS lists 1807 Large Stars 50/20, 1807 Small Stars, and 1807 Large Stars. Since the corresponding Overton numbers are 112, 113, and 114 respectively, why pay the $15 just to include the actual Overton number? Sounds like duplication to me.

I think it is the Overton # you will be paying for.

Feb 16th they slabbed my 1807 as Large Stars 50/20. But as you know it was the O-111 and not the O-112. They are both Large Stars 50/20 but different die marriages as per Overton but not as per Red Book.

So it looks like PCGS will stick with the free Red Book designations but will not attribute the Overton number without the $15 charge.

The reason I did not have them attribute my 1807 as the O-111 is because on the Long Beach Show special 3 hr service for $205, attribution was not offered.

My concern is who are they going to get to do their attribution service. As most bust half collectors know they often goofed up on the Red Book varieties so they obviously are going to have to hire some real sharp cookie for their new attribution service.

    Anyone know who??

So, are you saying that all the varieties listed in the PCGS Price Guide for Bust Halves would be listed on the label without paying the $15?

I am not a student of the PCGS coin numbering system manual nor the Red Book but it appears that PCGS has been slabbing by attributing Red Book varieties on their labels and will continue doing so.

Now as for the PCGS price guides, I don't use them but I would suspect they follow their own protocol used in their coin numbering system. (The manual used for submissions.)

    Do they or don't they?

By the time I wake up tomorrow the answer should be posted here or perhaps the merry pranksters will chat away all night and have their sport with the issue and the answer will be lost in mumble jumble.
  • The varieties that PCGS attributes for free are Red Book varieties, of which there are perhaps 50 (If you count overdates, etc). Overton lists some 470+ varieties. Red Book varieties are popular, as they can be attributed without specific microscopic die diagnostics, many Overton varieties cannot be attributed without the book and a high power glass.

I assume you're referring to that amazing coin (1807 O.111) imaged over at CoinZip. What a stunner! What's the story behind it's acquisition?

I don't think BB is around any longer so he may be unable to answer your question here.

He's been poofed over here but yes that is the coin he has posted on coinzip.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • Does anyone have a link to the O-111?
