What is the guess on the hammer for this coin? The next bid is $4600 (including the juice). These dont come up for auction much, I would guess 6K as the final price. Anyone else care to venture a thought?

I can see it bringing $5k. I wouldn't pay that much, but there are well-heeled registry set owners who would.
Anyone else remember when the Ikes were first issued? I ordered 5 each of the blue and brown 1971 Ikes. The uncs. arrived first, and I was disappointed in the quality. The '71 proofs didn't arrive in the mail until Feb. 1972, but they were nice, as you would expect them to be. I debated whether to order the uncs. in '72, but decided to go ahead. When I received them, I was pleasantly surprised to find all 5 coins with a smooth, milky-white luster, higher relief than the '71's, and very few marks. The average '72 "blue" Ike is probably 2 grade points better than the average '71, but I believe that so many people were turned off by the ugly '71's that they didn't bother ordering them in the following years.
I'll be interested in seeing the final price on this one.
Based on prices of MS67 clad Ikes, and that this is competing in the same registry sets, I'd think $4-6K is the range. Very surprising if it were to reach 8+
Nicest example I've ever seen, and priced as one too.

IMHO,,,,, one thing that keeps the 1972-S Silver IKE from bringing a greater hammer price is that it will only raise the point average in the IKE Varieties set by ONLY .01 points.
Same applies with the 1973-S & 1974-S coins. The 1971-S & 1976-S coins add .02 points.

I'm not a fan of the silver Ikes. Actually, I wouldn't even include them in my collection except for the registry (and since they're not too pricey in ms67/68). I collect coins meant for circulation and love the challange of finding high grade clad Ikes. Silvers were made to be collected, and how many ms68 72-s's are out there, 1000+.
One problem, if I'm going to pass Grandam in the registry I need that ms69 72-s! Doh! I'll be happy to be tied with him .
"but I really don't think it would grade 69 today."
depends - if we are using the scale for Presidential dollars, the coin might grade 71 today
The price does not surprise me as PCGS has been grading very few MS69 Ikes of late (or PR70DCAM coins for that matter). But, the reality is the jump between grades is roughly 50x. Obviously, most Ike collectors would happily settle for a PQ MS68 specimen at 1/50th the price.
On the other hand, I went out to dinner the other night with a friend who wanted to treat me and my family to a nice dinner as his thanks for all the money he made buying US mint product this year (and it is only March) and he told me to order whatever wine I wanted from the wine list. The list had wonderful selections including some really nice bottles at $7,400/bottle (1995 Napa 'Screaming Eagle Cabernet"), $7,600/bottle (1994 Napa "Screaming Eagle Cabernet"), etc, etc. I guess with tax and tip, we are takling around $10,000/bottle out the door. I opted for a nice Grolsch large beer bottle (you don't see those very often in restaurants any more) icy cold with a super frosted mug. To the gentleman who enjoys ordering that $7,600 bottle of wine though - why not enjoy an MS69 Ike along with it.

P.S. Anyone out there ever drink these "Screaming Eagles"? I prefer my Eagles more quietly perched on my coins for $7,500!
