What's the story on 1933 Goudey's?

Some have "Big League Chewing Gum" across the bottom face of the card and some don't. I know next to nothing about the cards, not an area I've studied yet. Thanks.

  • The 1933 Goudey set was printed in different series of 24 cards per sheet. The first series was issued around March/April and the last around December 1933/January 1934. The last 3 series or 72 cards did not have the Big League Chewing Gum on them, I'm don't know why they changed the style. The cards on these sheets were card numbers: 97 to 99, 107 to 114, 121 to 129, 142 and 190 to 240.

Here are some scans of the cards without the Big League Chewing Gum on them.

  • Thanks for the info!

Seems a strange way to number them also.
  • They numbered them this way so the kids would have to chase the set. The famous story of course is the 106 card that they withheld and did not issue the 106 card until 1934 after people wrote angry letters to them that they couldn't complete the set. Why they used a retired player is unknown since all the other players in the set were either playing or managing (Speaker and Collins were managing I think).

In a SMR issue in 2006, Mike Murray wrote an article about the 1933 Goudey set. In the article, he had the exact numbers for each series. This is what he wrote:

    << <i>Sheet 1 (cards 1-5, 25-35 & 45-52), sheet 2 (cards 6-24 & 36-40), sheet 3 (cards 41-44, 58-67, 75-79 & 92-96), sheet 4 (cards 100-105, 115-120 & 130-141), sheet 5 (53-57, 68-74 & 80-91), sheet 6 (cards 143-165 with card 144 printed twice), and sheet 7 (cards 166-189) all have the red label at the bottom of the cards that reads “Big League Chewing Gum”. >>

Sheet 1 & 2 have a lot of really tough cards to find in nice shape, and are deemed the low numbers. Cards 41-44 are really not low-numbered cards as they were in sheet 3, but most people usually refer to the low numbers with #1 to #52. There is speculation that the card stock used for the first couple of sheets was poorer...and the fact the kids were handling them for longer periods of time meant these cards are much tougher to find in high grade.

just shows that a little patience and it's OK to have poor cards till you can afford the high grade cards.
