Question on holes punched in cards ('80-'81 Topps bb)

In another post I mentioned a hoard of cards I purchased. In the stash were a couple dozen 1980-81 Topps basketball cards which all had single holes punched in them (see scans below). Does anyone have any idea who would have done this (distributor?) or why this was done?? I don't think the previous owner would have done it.
Thanks for any tips!

<< <i>had a friend that used to do this and would take fishing line and wrap thru the holes and hang them from the ceiling with a thumb tack. i used to do this with those mini baseball helmets (the ones about 5" in size). >>
That was back in the day, eh, David?! I've got some '62 Topps cards my brothers, cousins and I wrote positions on as we played games with them. Still got'em and wouldn't part with them because of the memories attached. I need to document those cards and make sure their story -- and value! -- is known...
strange...
"all yours are solid and MINE have the holes in them...so hands off..."

Now that I could believe! The coworker who I bought these from is as close to a perfectionist as anyone I've ever met. I could see HIM punching the cards for ID purposes!

Forgive me for being so dumb, what the heck do the Portland Beavers play?

zef, The Beavs are the AAA team for the Padres. They were part of the old Pacific Coast League (PCL) back in the heyday of minor league ball.
