Ok, here is the scenario.................you won this card see......

image

You buy a "RAW" card off that ever-popular kingdom of the infinitely available (huh?)....

Anyway, the card you buy is described as "NM/MT". You win the card, and not necessarily at
a "steal" price. You pay for it, wait patiently, get it in the mail......and....oh &#%$*#$^*....here we go again....!

The card is so overgraded, it is unbelievable! All four corners have wear, it has a light stain on the reverse and one
of the corners even has a slight bend on it as if someone took something to the edge and made an indent on it.

Now the question.....obviously we would all feel we should get a refund, but, since it was so grossly overgraded,
should you get a refund on your return postage?

Of course, we are being hypothetical here aren't we? image

Let the games begin!

I'd be skeptical of any raw card graded NM Mt. Didn't you have a scan?

  • Ok, to make it easier, lets say there was an "AVERAGE" size scan of the card and it "LOOKED" decent.

at this point I figure any card of value in NM MT would be graded before it was sold, so if I did take a flyer and buy it I'd consider myself lucky to get a refund on it. I generally figure 2 grades down from stated condition when buying raw, unless I have prior experience with the seller.

  • My two cents.... I have found some of the most grossly overgraded raw cards seem to come from these larger sellers/companies who send you crap ass newspaper catalogs in the mail. After six transactions, with three different companies, I vowed never again.

    NOTHING hypothetical.

LOL. Good luck with that-- I'm sure the seller is just going to jump at the chance to refund you both the hammer price and the shipping charges.

Try for a refund, and when you don't get one shrug your shoulders and move on. Seriously--is this the first time this has happened to you? If so, consider yourself extremely lucky.

This is sage counsel. It wasn't as true two or three years ago, but it's surely true now. If the seller is an unknown entity you will save yourself countless headaches by assuming that nothing you're buying raw is unaltered AND NM+ or better. One or the other, yes. Both? Not often enough to make is worth the hassle.

I plan on, and do a lot of shrugging off when it comes to buying raw online.

Personally - I'd be happy with the refund of the cost of the card. Most times, I don't get that.

Not that I'm hoping for bad luck on anybody, but I'm kinda glad to see that Ebay is getting known for people dumping junk cards on there. I loved the days of card shows so hopefully this will help see a resurgence of them.

My own philosophy.....I only buy PSA graded cards on E-Bay. I know what Im getting and if I chose to pay for the card then its on me.
  • Yes I know what you mean. I usually figure one to two grades down and set my bid accordingly. It has taken me a few years and some horrible transactions, but I've gotten better at spotting good cards from scans.

  • I won a MINT card from "Auctionsuperstore" on February 18. I paid by PayPal on February 19. This loser waited until March 8 to ship the card. Of course, it wasn't even close to being mint. And, he's one of those dirtbag sellers that doesn't leave feedback so that he can retaliate if he gets a negative.

Yes, he had a nice scan, but I couldn't see the corner creases until I had it in front of me.

Sorry to say, but when it comes to eBay, I only buy graded cards. If I am buying a set or box, I only buy stuff that has been graded or is factory sealed. It took me about 1,000 cards to figure this out, but I did and I am glad I did because I feel so much better when I go to the mailbox now.

Ebay makes it tough to sell raw. I sold several low $$ 1969 Topps NrMt/Mt recently and got mostly minimal bids. These were WS special, leaders, low interest HOFs. It trickles down, I can't pay decent prices for raw cards unless I have a non-ebay outlet. I got complimentary feedback from the buyers which made me feel good, so maybe its a reputation building thing.

PSA has created a two-tier price system with high dollar cards, but has depressed prices on the $5-$15 card because it's not cost effective to slab for resale.

    Just an observation.
