Any information on those football helmets from the 60s-70s?

Saw an article recently on those football helmets that used to sell in gumball machines in the 60s and 70s. Many times they had pencil sharpeners in them. I understand that the old ones do have some value to them. I also see that they are back in gumball machines again. Does anyone know how to tell an old one from a new one? I know some of the old ones many have old football team logos but how do they get dated? Are any very rare or desireable?...Any guides? Thanks for any information....Spazzy

I forgot about those. I used to love those helmets! I had tons of them from the late 70's up through the 80's.

I think all mine got tossed in the can though image

Im not sure but I do think all teams were represented. I remember getting an Eagles helmet and stomping on it image

I would go until I was out of money or until I pulled a Cowboy's helmet image
  • I just bought 20 or so on Ebay from the 70's (based on the teams and design of helmets) for about $10
so I doubt they have much value.

I still have all of mine plus a few hundred I bought 8 years by feeding the vending machine. I was absolutely nuts about them when I was a kid in the early 70s and now my son, plays with all of them by lining them up according to best to last in any given season. He also uses them to make his weekly football picks.

The oldest ones I have include the Giants, Bengals, Jets, Pats, Bills and a few others from the late 60s and early 70s. I remembered trading an old Chargers in 1972. I wish I still had that one. I do have an old Oilers but it was the light blue one. I do recall seeing a gray one somewhere and thought that was cool.

I just did an eBay search and the newer ones seem to have more elaborate facemasks. The ones up until at least the mid 80's had those Gale Sayers style ones.

Like everybody else, I've always liked these (I distinctly remember, when I was around 5-6, seeing the Vikings helmet for the first time in my life as one of these and really liking it.)

A guy has a lot of 38 or so vintage ones or eBay right now. He's up to $38.00 bucks with 6 days left, so I think we're not the only people who dig these.
