Eisner Buys Topps for $385.4 Million...

A company headed by former CEO Michael Eisner purchased Topps today for $385.4 million. At first, I thought to myself, wow that's a lot of money. But then I gave it further thought and saw that it isn't even $1 billion or even half of $1 billion. $384.5 million. Is that a lot? Absolutely. But is it A LOT? I don't think so. You guys might differ.

It reminds me of when Bill Gates was worth over $100 billion. He could have purchased every team in all four major sports. Now that's amazing. Maybe Eisner will now spend his evenings rummaging through the Topps Vault!

  • eisner didn't spend a penny of his own money to buy Topps. The company was relatively cheap. But, the business is tough. I would not put a lot of faith in his ability to turn it into a high flyer with a large multiple.

Just a bad feeling this isn't going to be good for Topps or the hobby. We'll see.

I'm a bit concerned about it as well. I shudder to think what could happen if Topps were to go out of the marketspace, leaving only Upper Deck. It would probably cause me to give up modern card collecting.
