What do you do with a madman bidding up your set?

I guess it happens to everyone. You are slowly building a set in a condition that you can afford. You have competition but they know the lay of the land as well. Once in a while a team collector or player collector will bid insane prices but pretty much things are intact. If you already own the card, you don't put in a bid just to raise prices.

Along comes a lunatic when it comes to bidding. He has no regard for pops on his bidding. Prices go up 50%-100%. He buys cards that he won the prior week in the same condition. He hasn't started a registry, but he does have an EBAY store where much of his overpriced merchandise is ending up.

Fortunately I collect more than one set and in the past these guys have burned themselves out, but until that happens it sucks. Up to this point he doesn't snipe.

There is nothing anyone here can do, but thanks for listening to my depressing tale.

I usually list wiht a high reserve and even higher BIN, if they bite fine, if not will will keep the card. PSa 8's are great but some are 1200.00 more than a 7. That much $$ I just can't rationalize

Earlier this evening, I had a SMR snipe, triggered, and then went up an additional 50% within 4 seconds.

Edited because I actually low balled it image

  • you have to sit on the sidelines and wait it out. Prices will eventually stabilize or fall. patience.

I have been dealing with the same thing in the 57 set. The same guy buys multiple copies of the same card and he is going STRONG. I do hope he goes away soon.

Same thing is happening right now with the Emmitt Smith cards. There is some new guy that came on in December and he is making me pay at least $23.00 per psa 10.

I was winning them for months at anywhere between $4.99 - $16.99.

I hope he disappears as well image

Happens all the time. Thats the advantage of working on several sets, when one gets hot you move to another, and then come back once they burn themselves out.

I don't suppose by chance you are referring to faotw29? I've been trying to win a PSA 8 Steve Largent rc for quite a while and he's outbid me on every single one I've bid on. I even got pi$$ed off one day and bid 50% more than they usually go for and he already had a higher bid in than that. I gave up. Once I see he doesn't win every single one, I'll take another stab.

I feel your pain brother...I feel your pain.
  • I had the same thing happen watching a dealer out there bid up PSA 10's I was bidding on for my set when he was selling the exact same product. Well last couple weeks I just didnt bid and sure as sh@@ he ended up eating them. I was LMAO. I wont name him although I should but he reads these boards and all I can say is enjoy the cards!!image

Patience. On eBay, one person cannot usually ever corner the market on a particular set in the long term. Your time will come!

The best way to deal with bidders who place 'top all' snipes is to just bid more. If they have to keep paying well above market value, something will give pretty quick. Most of the time these bidders are just placing really high snipes banking on the fact that they'll only pay amounts close to their top bid a small percentage of the time.

    Patience is the key.

That's a good point. I never thought of that. Things will even and he will be stuck with Randy Moss as a teammate image

It is not faotw29. The guy has a great feedback on thousands of purchases so he is probably a decent guy just trying to make a living and I don't want to call him out on a public board just because he has more money to blow than I do.

He seems to bid the same on every card so yesterday I bid 50 cents less and he overpaid on everything.

well i there is a favre guy out there that is the same way. he will pay >$50 for a PSA 10 1 of 1 that will soon be a higher pop card. i toy with him every now and again. i bid up so he pays even more. if its a dealer, i say let him pay high prices. thats a bad business model he has and wont be in business too long.
