Newbie Alert - My first post!...a couple Q's re:PSA
Hello all,
I'm one of those folks who collected as a kid, put them away for a bunch of years, and am now getting back into the hobby. I just became a member of PSA, sent in my free 6-card sub (five 8's and one 9 - mildly disappointing, but fair after taking a closer look).
I've got 2 questions I was hoping someone could help me out with:
1. How often does PSA overlook a glaring flaw on a card? I just bought a 1990 Fleer Larry Bird PSA 10 off Ebay, and while the front is immaculate (even under the 10x loupe I bought), the back has a 1/4 inch long fray right in the black stripe on the back of the card!! It is noticable from at least 2-3 feet away. Is it common for PSA to miss something like that?
2. I have 1986 Fleer Jordan RC that I feel is either a high-grade 7 or low-grade 8. Speaking strictly from a resale point of view, is it worth it for me to slab it? Seems like I'd be losing value if it came back a 7.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
FYI - I've started my sights on some managable Basic sets. I've started an 8-or better Julius Erving, Larry Bird, and 1986 Fleer Sticker set. I'm having trouble finding quality 1977-78 Erving cards. If anyone has one they'd be willing to part with (PSA 8 or a raw card that would get an 8 or better), I'd be interested in making an offer.

Don't sell - so I'm clueless.
Did ya pull the Jordan or buy it?
Good luck on your basic and sticker sets.

There are a ton of counterfeit Jordan rookies out there so even if it came back a 7, you are much better off having it slabbed. I think I saw that it is one of the most counterfeited cards in the hobby.
Good luck on the Bird set, I have a basic one going right now....
Just seems like yesterday I was talking to 5, or was that 4???
Where does the time go
Welcome again

Thanks for rolling out the welcome mat for me (and others who have recently joined)!
To answer someone's question, I actually have a pretty good story about obtaining the Jordan RC. When I was kid (like 11 or 12), one Saturday per month, my mom used to drop me and my brother off at the local card shop for a 30-45 minutes while she ran errands. We always brought $20 with us. After buying my lot of cards, I had less than $2.00 left, so I bought 3 packs of the 86-87 Fleer on a whim. Pulled a Jordan, Bird, Ewing, Barkley, Dumars, and Erving. Not bad for $1.50!!!
Unfortunately, I am a little technology challenged at the moment, so I can't scan cards, but I have attached pics of the PSA 10 Bird. They really don't do the observed flaw justice, but you can see it on the left edge of the card near the scoring average.

Grade the Jordan.
There will always be under and over graded cards. I look at all my personal subs as undergraded and all my ebay buys as over. It is laughable but weirdly enough I am starting to think like that. It is very subjective so walk don't run.. my.02

It is generally a good idea to have any condition of a card professionally graded if the card is often-counterfeited, and Jordan definitely falls into that categoery.
Best of luck!
