So I bought a couple of BVG cards....

A 1962 Topps Tom Tresh Rookie PSA 6.5 and a BVG 8.5 1979 Topps Thurman Munson and let me tell you how disappointed I was.

Before I go on my little rampage, the first BVG card I bought was a BVG 6 1963 Topps Bombers Best. I was ok with the grade. The 6 grade fit.

Now, I get the 62 Tresh and the thing looks like a PSA 5 at best. Well, that can happen, even with a PSA card, right? So I take another crack at BVG because the scan looked so good and Ive heard some people say they have gotten undergraded cards so I was thinking maybe I won myself a 9 Munson on ebay...worth a crack and submit. The Munson is absolute CRAP.

I first want to say I am almost 100% sure it is a sheet cut. Never seen a 79 with edges like this. And I have seen LOTS of 79s. Second is this disgusting ding in the upper right hand corner. The card is a PSA 7 at best and I dont think it would even cross into a PSA holder.

Im not writing this to bash Beckett grading...this is just a very recent experience with 2 BVG graded cards and it has left a real sour taste. I highly doubt I'll ever get anything BVG graded again.

Thankfully, I paid peanuts for these 2 cards. I hope everyone else, if you so choose to buy a BVG card, has much better luck than me. My scanner is down right now otherwise I would have posted pics. If I get it up and going again soon and anyone is interested in seeing them, I'll get them up.

Now I shall prepare for their deaths...I have a new Rugar 22 Magnum Rifle that needs sighting in.....

  • I bought one BVG card in my life, 1 1958 Hank Aaron - neither GAI or PSA would cross it over due to trimming....NEVER AGAIN!!

Lothar had some fantastic experience with BVG. I think he had a couple of 4's cross to 6's and 7's.

I busted a regular BGS 9, that when cracked had a weird dent in the top of it. Truthfully, I never would have submitted the card for grading. But it was already cracked out of the bgs holder so I thought what the heck. It came back a PSA 9. I was VERY surprised.

    Everyone does make mistakes.

  • nice Thorpe, John. Makes me want to start a football set.

  • How do they arrive at a 3.5? Take all the sub-grades and it averages out to a 5...I know this is not how they grade, but still seems low with the 2 high numbers you received. Obviously surface plays a huge part i.e. wrinkles

I think the grade can't be more than one point higher than the lowest subgrade, if I remember right.

Why in the heck is it only a 3.5? Think I see a wrinkle top left?

Better not be centering because that card is a beyatch to find well centered.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

You are correct. It's actually .5 above the lowest subgrade, but if the other grades are all multiples above, it can go up 1.0.

no wrinkes... it has a couple spots of paper loss on the back, perhaps totalling the size of a dime.
