  • He is a very good return man and a very good possesion receiver (although he can break a long one -has speed). It is a great pick-up for the Pats, but they may have given up too much.

Bottom line - he is a good and will help that team

Agreed, I too think a second round pick is a bit much but we need help at the position so I can deal with it.

why not just pay deion branch and not have to trade your 2nd rounder for wes welker (he is a good player, though)

    but still...

We got a first rounder for Branch which was worth it IMO, not to mention they did not want to pay him what he wanted.

until demonstrated otherwise, I have no reason to question anything the Pats braintrust decides to do.

Agreed. Welker has been a very productive return man on punts & kickoffs the last couple of years and he emerged last season as a go-to receiver for Harrington, so I'm guessing the Pats see a potential star emerging.

Welker would have cost a second rounder as compensation as a restricted free agent. He fills two roles that Troy Brown has performed admirably over the years. With Brown retiring, Welker will provide seamless transition as both slot receiver and punt return man. Add to this Dillon's release, and Maroney's subsequent promotion to featured back and it is easy to see that Maroney won't be returning kickoffs again next season - which leaves another hole.

If Welker plays the slot, punt, and kickoff return man at the same level he has done thus far, he will be a steal. A 3-for-1 pickup.

Did Caldwell's terrible play in the AFC championship game not demonstrate a mistake from the Pats' brain trust? yuck!
They can't keep getting by on these late round steals, they will have to pay players what they are worth, or am I wrong here? maybe they can get by?

  • You can't continue to give up great player after great player and continue to expect to win. You lose respect in the locker room and your team simply cannot replace great players with cheaper, younger ones over and over and expect to win.

Welker was on my Dolphins squad and will be missed. One of those tough lil' bastiches that plays the game with passion. Pats fans, you will love him.

I'm happy that we were able to pick up the two picks though because it looks like Cameron is unloading everyone and looking to rebuild our squad his way. I'm excited, but nervous because we've lost our TE, 2nd WR, KICK/PUNT RETURNER, 2 DTs, DE, Starting QB...etc. We'll see.

Look guys at the teams that have won the Super Bowl recently, all of them have rid themselves of high priced whining veterans. Both the Pats and the Colts did this. With caps and injuries you can end up like Oakland, signing whiney A$$ athletes who then don't produce. I don't blame them, the Pats or the Colts or now the Bears for standing pat and getting rid of crybaby athletes. It maybe about the players but its more about the team. Go ask Al.image

You forgot to mention the Steelers. They let go of high priced punk Plaxico before they won a title. Good move!

I don't think you should panic over losing your starting QB. Afterall. It was Joey Harrington.

That would be like me panicing if the Royals "lost" Angel Berroa. image

There is a big difference between letting go of a high priced vet now and again if your team is still loaded, IE Steelers or Colts of recent seasons. Pats are terribly depleted at the WR position, yet were still letting their best go and not signing any notable FA's. Sometimes you just have to put up with a primadonna, I mean it's the NFL, what are you going to do.
