Sports Card Insurance

My insurance company says they cover paintings, pictures, etc. However, they only cover up to $2,000 for baseball/football cards.
Do any of you guys have insurance?? Is so, who do you use? I did meet one company at the show this weekend in Reading. I'm
looking to shop around.

Thanks,

Dan

My Liberty Mutual policy covers them without a rider. My Illinois Farmers policy required one, I had it for $20k and it cost me something like $60/yr IIRC.

  • Do they require you to have a monitored alarm system? Locked to a safe???

    Thanks again.

  • Liberty Mutual but capped at $100K. You will probably need all your major policies (auto, umbrella, home) covered by LM to get this stuff covered. CIA (see cohocorp response) is the best option if the value exceeds this amount.

I don't have $100k worth of cards, not even with all of my memorabilia am I approaching that figure. I have enough that it's worth insuring, but not so much I need to worry about anything more than my homeowners coverage.

jradke- I don't live in IL. I live in MN actually. I provided my agent with a printout from my (geeky) database I built that has my card, grade, price paid and SMR (current as of purchase date). Though he did not require it. I probably should keep cert #'s for reference as well, but I have scans of most every card on my registry and in my photobucket which are obviously kept offsite, unlike my db.

With Liberty Mutual they treated it like any other personal property. I even made him ask his boss and another agent who "might have been Moses' insurance agent" image

Like I said, IL Farmers made me put a rider. I gave a generic description of items to them and all that was listed on my policy was "Special Limits on Sportscard / Memorabilia Collection ; $20,000" and then the rate. There is nothing designating it on my LM policy.

The problem I have with my collection is the most I can get for any one card is $200. I am calling my agent now to see if I can fix that. Thanks for the reminder.

My add on is to my home owners policy. $20,000 replacement value and it is only $61 a year.

They never inspected my home but they asked those questions. But, I have a safe, fire alarm, monitored theft alarm etc.

They did make me submit an inventory of my cards as well as an SMR report showing the value and it had to be approved. It was well worth the hassle but again, they cap it. CIA is the best alternative to your homeowner's insurance.

Another vote for Collectible Insurance Agency.

  • The only issue I have with CIA is the burden of proof on proving your is loss is with the owner of the cards. I keep my documents relating to the purchase price of my cards in a safe deposit box.
