  • Handyman.....great catch!! You are absolutely correct!! You should ask him if the scan is a raw pack. Act innocent and excited.

he also uses copyrighted materials in his ebay ad directly from CU.

  • I woulod say w/ 99% certainty that this guy just cropped the pic from BBCE.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,394 ✭✭✭✭✭
I wonder why he says it's not graded. Do you think hes using his pic to switch the product or just doesnt want to give away the serial number. Or if hes just selling a fake item and taking the money.
I hate this type of ebayer seller.

link to the 52 topps pack

edited to add comment- one reason i am so reluctant to deal with out of country sellers is that they are much harder to hunt down. i realize there are good sellers in other countries but there is still that complication.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,394 ✭✭✭✭✭
Lets just say he did buy it from BBCEXCHANGE. Then why the story about finding it in his grandfauthers basement?? And now its not graded? Then he busted it out why? Looks shady.
  • cohocorpcohocorp Posts: 1,371 ✭✭
bbce exchange still has the 2 packs he has advertised. we discussed them at the reading show when i went on friday.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,394 ✭✭✭✭✭
This guys story just doesnt add up then. Selling a fake item with a fake story.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,394 ✭✭✭✭✭
I emailed him saying I was really interested in the 1952 pack at your price. But first could I see a pic of the back of the pack.

As that is the most important part of the pack. I wonder if I get anything. There should be no reason why he couldnt send me a pic if he has the pack.

He gives you a link to not getting ripped off on Ebay.

Another interesting thing-the location listed for the 2 packs are at least 3 hours apart. I clicked on a few of his other listings, and while most were in Vancouver, there was one in Sacramento. Just another red flag in this auction.

looks like he is just using steve's inventory. thats a pretty common practice. basically if someone hits his bin, he goes and buys it from steve and ships to his customer.

    edited for spelling
  • cohocorpcohocorp Posts: 1,371 ✭✭
a huge red flag would be if he was at the same price or lower than steve's price and using his pics. but since he is higher, it makes sense. and the canadian guy is selling it on a different venue than steve is, which also makes sense. its a very very common practice. many people do not have the financial means to stock a ton of items or the high end stuff, so they do this to expand their inventory.
  • What like a ghost inventory....does that work?
  • cohocorpcohocorp Posts: 1,371 ✭✭
in general it can work. in this case, it will not. anyone who is a potential customer of those 2 packs should know to check steve's inventory and will see it cheaper there. but many many times the dealers i sold to would use my inventory the same way. they knew my prices so they would add their mark-up. i didnt care as i always preferred to deal with fewer people. to me it was less paperwork, therefore less hassles. so if they wanted to use my inventory, fine with me.

edited to add- i dont know whats up with the canadian guy using different locations though. that is a red flag to me. but on the surface, if someone paid him the $6000 or so for the 52 pack, why wouldnt he pay steve the $5500 for his. makes $500 legit. assuming steve didnt sell his in the meantime. image

but this pack isnt graded so how is he selling steves inventory???
  • cohocorpcohocorp Posts: 1,371 ✭✭
this strategy is more common with dealers who have large mailing lists. they normally dont advertise it on a large venue such as ebay. whereas its easy to search around for better prices.

this allows dealers who have low capital (for example $50,000) to have a larger perceived inventory. in realilty though, a $50,000 inventory is small when dealing in those items.

<< <i>but this pack isnt graded so how is he selling steves inventory??? >>

first of all, this is just my view.

ok. if the canadian guy sells his (raw) pack, he can simply buys steve's, crack it out of the slab, and ship it to his customer. btw, the dealer who actually owns the item (in this case steve) normally isnt aware of the other seller. in my case, when other dealers were using my inventory, i simply didnt care since i preferred to deal with fewer people anyway.

none of this should matter in this particular case as anyone who may buy these 2 items discussed would know to go to steve directly.
  • interesting, cohocorp. so, if he is doing what you think he is, selling SH's inventory, why make the claim it is raw? makes me wonder if he is going to buy the graded pack, crack it, open the pack to see what's there, and if he hits the jackpot, refund the bidder or possibly replace the 52T mantle with a very nice PSA 8 common. Or, he could replace all the cards with beautiful PSA 8 commons and who would complain? Pretty nice scheme.

I'm a little surprised that PSA allows him to include the SMR listing for 1952 Topps in his auction. I'm sure he asked before he did it. Hmmmm..... image

I can't stand self-righteous thieves! Hopefully the auctions will be canceled and he'll get booted off ebay. His FB is awful anyway.

I dont know how to report him to ebay. Will someone do it??

    LOL nothing amazes me anymore.

Couple years back another slime ball tried the same exact thing using the T206 museums cards

If the museum wanted 100.00 for a card the slime ball would list it for 125.99 or more. Like Pat said it is pretty prevalent in the hobby.

If you have the persons permission i see no problem. A few dealers do it amongst themselves. (using the same price at times or one lists it higher. It is usually done on web sites though. Doing it w/o the other parties knowledge is slimey.

    Steve
    Good for you.
