  • if you compare the black outline over Jackie's shoulders on a known psa 6 and grampa's card, there is a larger than normal gap on the sellers card than on the graded Robinson. It is really noticeable. I am not an expert but this would scare me. I also would be concerned about a card seemingly this nice, not already in a holder.

couldnt the misplaced line on the 6 just be from bad registration?

  • as I said, I am NO expert on this. I suppose there are lots of variations but I looked at several graded cards and did not see this kind of gap. I could be way off base but I am always skeptical these days of raw cards, especially a raw JR, that could fetch big $$ if it graded well. And the one on ebay looks like an 8 to me, SMR $8500.

  • I can't speak for the baseball but the '48 Leaf boxing cards are notorious for poor focus. Something about having all of the printing processes lined up properly during production. I've heard that many collectors (for the boxing cards) will purchase a well-focused example in poorer condition than a poor-focused example that's in good shape.

The designs of the two sports are very similar, if not identical so I'd be willing to bet that those problems existed in the baseball as well. I'm not expert on figuring out what is and what is not authentic but this should be kept in mind for this discussion.

  • I e-mailed the guy asking about this and he responded saying:

"NO NO NO..... OMG! I know this is confusing. Sorry! Look... My name is Mike Vail. I'm listing theses for a friend. He and I are both responding to these messages independently from each other. I'm just listing these cards for him. They belonged to HIS grandfather! Not Mine. I assure you this is no scam! If it was, I'd give up now and not bother to tell you any of this. I've been selling on eBay for years and have excellent feedback. Please don't let this confusion ruin your experience. It's unfortunate our responses were not better coordinated, but I assure you everything listed here and in the messages is absolutely true and correct. Again, sorry for the confusion... If you would liek to call me, I can be reached at my home number at (***) *** - **** Bets Regards, Mike Vail"

I'd edit his phone number out of that message if it were me.
