Does anyone remember how much late 80s/early 90s factory sets were when originally released?

I would guess around $30/$40 perhaps? Geez, whatever happened to "someday those cards will be worth more"; it's now been around 15-20 years. image

  • Ill use 1990 as an example.

i bought my Fleer Factory sets direct from fleer...maybe $14.99 a set?
resold them for $25-$29 when the first came out. I sold about 90% of them. probably lucky to get $10 a piece these days right?

I still have 9 sittin around somewhere...

Also got a CASE of 1991 Score baseball series one, paid $10 factory direct lol. what a deal! (I actually bought 5 cases way back when) probably sold three of them for decent money, then blew out once case at cost. still got the other one image

That is true, but it's not really a FACTORY set. I guess I can forget about trying to submit my 1980s rookies for PSA grading cuz I bet 10s don't get over $1000 anymore, do they? image

I only bought a couple then. I got the '89 Fleer factory set around October of that year, for @ $20. I bought 10-12 Basketball racks that same day. At a now long-closed Rose's.

A year or two later, I bought an '88 set for $40.00

I had fun putting them both in albums, so...

And now you can get BOTH the regular and traded set for $9 at BBCE, and those sets are now 17 years old! So much for increase in value. image Shame too, those are some very beautifully designed sets.

Does anyone know if the factory 1989 Fleer baseball sets could hold a Bill Ripken error? If sealed bf they knew of the error? Or did they make the sets after all the product was packed out?

They made the factory sets near the end of the year; they all just have the cheap black box version as far as I know.

Wasn't the 1989 Upper Deck Factory Set somewhere around $80 to $100 back in 1989? I remember it was the hottest thing going, and I was pretty excited that I won one from a local baseball card store that had a grand opening raffle. It was cool knowing that I had at least one Griffey RC, though I still chased others through buying packs. I still have that set today, I believe it is still factory wrapped.

I believe it reached a peak of $150+ during the early 1990s.
