Good for the Cowboys, O-tackles are worth their weight in gold

    Terrible signing. Consider:

    1) No team knows more about Davis' ability than the Cardinals
    2) The Cardinals have a very bad O-Line
    3) The Cardinals let him go.

A classic example of asymmetric information in action, IMO, and another bad, bad signing by Jerry.
  • Too early to tell if it is a bad signing. 80% of players need to be in the right system or scheme to maximize their potenial. (the exceptions being the likes of Peyton, Favre and LDT to name a few)

In the right system I think Davis could be a monster.

I will say this....he has not performed like a #2 overall pick

1 guy does not make the line, imo he will be a big deal in big D

<< <i>1 guy does not make the line, imo he will be a big deal in big D >>

He plays what is arguably the first or second most important position on the offensive side of the ball. If he was worth the money the team that already had him and knew the most about him-- in this case the Cardinals-- would not have let him go.

Well the Cowboys line is decent, adding him to the line definately wont hurt, would they be better off drafting a guy? I think adding a guy with NFL experience and his size might be worth the money spent for the Cowboys, they have a better shot at making a Super Bowl run than the Cards do so it might not be that bad of a signing. The Cards are in tough shape I dont think signing him to a long term deal would be a good investment for them, they are years away from being a contender. I do see your point, but I still say not a bad option for the Cowboys.

Agree with Kuhlmann - it seems like a good signing but perhaps too high on the money. Of course the cap is going up so these salaries will also go up.

Maybe Jones is getting smart in his old age. Everyone in the NFC East has seen Andy Reid place supreme importance on the O-Line players in the draft and free agency, and it has paid off in helping the Eagles to dominate the NFC East for most of the recent past seasons.

NFL contracts are not guaranteed so they haven't spent 50 million, only 18 of that was guaranteed

There is a good chance Davis will end up playing guard where he is probabbly better suited

  • Guys...I would rather have Davis than the guy my team just signed for $50 million

The Browns signed an undersized guard (Steinbach from the Bengals) 7 years $50 mill

Then that is way too much money for a guard - that kind of money needs to go to a stud tackle, preferably left tackle.

hmmm answer me this? when have the cardinals made many smart choices? he is a solid player. cowboys addresed a big need here. jones cant go on a spending spree this year even no we are way under the cap.

bc next year t newman and t romo. will be free agents. and if they both perform well again. those will be heavy contracts.

plus this might be the weakest free agent class i have seen in a long time this year.

I think falcons made a good pickup also with the fullback from the ravens. will help vick have more time to do what he does.

O-Linemen have been under appreciated for years and are finally commanding a premium today.

I seriously doubt there will be any top tier OL left when Dallas drafts. So having said that, good move by them.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

What am I missing here? He's been considered a BUST for about 2-3 years now. How can this possibly be considered a good signing? Good move Cowboys...
  • The Cowboys got a guy that has yet do anything special. He was drafted very high in the first round, and has never lived up to it. Yet, they signed him to an enormous contract anyway. Even the REDSKINS, who pay everybody and need an offensive limeman badly, wouldn't give him that money. That being said, the Cowboys offensive line is awful, I guess they thought it was worth the risk. Nevertheless, I think it is a terrible signing.

    Here are the numbers...WOW!

Cowboys agreed to terms on a seven-year, $49.6 million contract with G/T Leonard Davis. The deal includes a $16 million signing bonus and $18.75 million in guarantees

I haven't analyzed the O-Line free agents out there, but I've seen this before when in weak years for free agents at given positions, certain NFL owners will overpay to fill a position, rather than being patient and wait untill next year or try to draft a player for that position.

Bottom line in the NFL, there are always exceptions, but it can be very difficult to forecast how players are going to perform especially because of injury. Also a below average player sometimes can suddenly step up and become a very good player. I have seen a number of O-Line players on the Eagles who seemed to be destined for 2nd or 3rd string in the NFL or being cut, finally step up and become starters and good players - and at other positions as well.

So...doing what Jones did, based on the members comments here, filling a need by overpaying a player who just happened to possibly be the best one available for the upcoming season, truly is a strategy which because of the cap, will keep a team mired in mediocrity.

Thank you Jerry! I luv ya!!! LOL

What you don't seem to get is that the Cardinals almost certainly have a better idea of how good/bad Davis is than the Cowboys. If the Cardinals didn't want him-- and this is a team that's going to be built entirely on offense for at least the next couple seasons-- then there's almost surely a good reason for this.

Answer me this-- when was the last time a team, any team, lost a lock-down RT to free agency? It doesn't happen, because teams do not let those guys go.

Didn't the Cowboys just do this with Marco Rivera a few years back?

As a Cardinal STH, I feel that Davis is too SLOW for the LT position, was the false start/penalty King for AZ O-Line and gave up the sack which caused Matt Leinart's shoulder injury. This injury resulted in Matt missing the remainder of the season.

This guy has not been worth the money. He was #2 overall draft pick and I believe has never made the Pro Bowl. I feel he is better suited as a NFL Guard, however, he's always wanted the Tackle paycheck. Apparently, the new coaches felt the same?

In addition, the Cards wish to Draft Joe Thomas (Wisconsin) as thier future LT. The Cards would rather add more team depth than place that much stock/$ in a player such as Davis.

    Top 5 questionable free agents
Mar 05, 2007 | 9:17AM | report this I already picked the best deals of the free-agency period, now it's time for the bad deals.

    Here are five I question:

    1. Leonard Davis to Dallas – This is the worst move of the offseason thus far. Signing the underachieving and underwhelming tackle to a 7-year, $49.6 million deal, with $18.75 million in guaranteed money, is beyond comprehension. Honestly – did he do anything in Arizona? And when new coaches, offensive line guru Russ Grimm and head coach Ken Whisenhunt, study the film and don't make you an offer to stay in Arizona, where they are desperate to talent upgrades on the line, well, that tells you everything about everything.

Deal gives Davis largest signing bonus in Dallas history

By STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP Sports Writer
    March 5, 2007

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Leonard Davis and the Dallas Cowboys finalized a nearly $50 million, seven-year deal Monday for the free agent offensive lineman to come home with a fresh start.

Davis wasn't re-signed by the Arizona Cardinals, who took him with the second overall pick out of Texas in 2001. The 6-foot-6, 372-pound Davis is from Wortham, Texas, about 80 miles south of Dallas.

"It's a new chapter in my life," Davis said. "I want to win games, which obviously I haven't been able to do in this part of my career. Right now, all I can do is look forward to being successful. ... I want to be able to have some respect, earn respect."

The deal includes $18.75 million in guaranteed money, a team-record $16 million signing bonus and a $2.75 million salary for 2007.

In Arizona, the 28-year-old Davis played guard and tackle while starting all 91 of his games over six seasons. But he never reached the Pro Bowl-level many envisioned for him.

The Cowboys aren't sure which position he'll play.

"It just glares out at you the flexibility his skills give us making what we want to be now and in the future what we want to do in our offensive line," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

Dallas is still negotiating to keep right tackle Marc Colombo from leaving in free agency. Right guard Marco Rivera recently back surgery for the second time in less than three years.

The signing bonus surpasses the $13 million given to Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, defensive back Deion Sanders and former guard Larry Allen.

But Davis' deal came only days after free agent lineman Eric Steinbach (Cleveland Browns) and Derrick Dockery (Buffalo Bills) got similar seven-year deals that included $17 million to $18 in guaranteed money.

Davis also visited with the Washington Redskins before choosing the Cowboys. The New York Giants were also interested in the lineman.

"The decision when it came down to it was not about the money. It was about where I really wanted to live my life," Davis said. "I'm excited just to know that something new is coming up. It will be a challenge, but I'm all about challenges."

    Good luck Cowboys fans.

A little high on the money? image If I were a "boy" fan, I'd be quiet on this one till he plays a few downs. I heard an NFL scout say today that this was the most overpaid free agent signed so far this after season. Think of the affect this will have on the cap if this guy just plays no better than he did in Zona, which was by any estimation was below average.
