I bought my first unopened GAI pack this weekend

It is not to rip, but to keep (for now). I got it from Steve Hart. image

That is AWESOME. Congrats Wondo. I have been eyeing those on his site for quite some time.

Now rip it! C'mon, you know you wanna. Do it. We're all doing it. It makes you feel good. image

How many cards are in that?

    Congratulations Wondo!

I don't have many graded packs - they display very nicely IMO.

There are two panels of two cards in the pack. According to Steve, he has had the only box known in the hobby. He broke and sold off the packs - mostly to Steinbrenner's son who ripped 'em. I am trying to see if it is as rare as Steve thinks, and would like to know if anyone else out there has any?

I've been looking for a few years, and other than a few odd ones on ebay the only ones I've seen are Steve's.
Packs do display quite well, and are very addicting, especially when bought from a good source like Steve. Here's a display I had a few years ago:

Very cool! I also purchased my first "vintage unopened packs" this weekend. Once I was able to finally connect to Steve's site (thanks to the use of a proxy server as I think the server hosting his site is blocking my IP Address for some reason), I was able to put together a purchase of 1980-1985, 1987 and 1985 Traded Topps baseball card packs. I've sent Steve an e-mail letting him know what else I'm looking for and hoping that he'll be able to point me in the right direction. image

I'd be curious in finding out how one goes about getting a pack graded and what that would cost? I mean, all of my modern packs probably won't be worth anything, but I'm curious about how much the grading costs. They look really nice to display in those graded holders and seem a lot safer and secure that way.

On the other hand, if anybody knows of any "pack holders" that could be used to house and store these packs it would be helpful too. All this recent talk about packs has got me interested in adding packs of cards to my collection of complete sets.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

Best I can do for now is a '52 Bowman

I do have a few display boxes- I like these a lot, and they are considerably less expensive than packs- plus you don't have to worry as much about if they are real or not, since they the fakes are so easy to detect.

there is a box of unopened '61 Nu Card Scoops in there, I almost opened a few packs last nite but repressed the urge.

Wondo, are you going to open it or keep it intact in the long term? Going for any more packs now?

Thanks a bunch. Hmmmmm..... Is it worth $14 plus a pack to keep them from ever being opened? I'll have to think about that. image

    Nice pickup Wondo !!!

Griffins, that is one eye popping display. It must have taken you many years to hunt down all those boxes.

Do you have any protection around the boxes or are they just uncovered ?

That is one awesome display !
Did you build the shelves yourself ? About how much do some early empty boxes run ?

First off, I apologize for unintentionally hijacking Wondo's thread. I just wanted to show some admiration for his great pickup, and show that packs can be a lot of fun when one guy isn't ripping off everyone else.
I have the packs and a bunch more, sort of. I have scans of everything, but the packs have gone to the safety deposit box (all the pre '72 ones anyway). No worries with temptation to open them, and with a puppy in the house it was safer to get them put away. Plus no concerns about UV fading them.
The boxes were really easy to find- they took about a year, but I was sporadic about pursuing them. The older ones aren't pristine, but they still present well. I have them filled with a block of styrofoam and then shrinkwrapped. This is termite country.
The early boxes run from about 150. for a '51 Redback box to about $650. for a '56 topps box, the early Bowmans and Topps just a bit below that. I still need a '52 Topps box, and both '53 Bowman boxes and the '48 and '49, and those will certainly be considerably more. The '53 Bowman Color box has Dimaggio on it, and is very tough.
The display was built by a friend to hold my CD's. When I got rid of all of them in favor of having everything in itunes I found the shelves were the perfect size for GAI's pack holders. Now it stores disks of home movies and pictures, along with some sort of small china boxes my wife sort of collects just to p' me off.
Packs from the mid '60's and newer are probably at the lowest price they have been at for years, and this is a great time to start on a run. I believe once PSA starts including them in registry sets the prices will shoot up as the confidence that has been eroded by GAI's revolving stable of graders is built back. The boxes are reasonable as well, and make a great display piece.

PSA had a special last month for 1972 and up, it was $10 a pack. I'm sure they will be running it again so stay tuned.

Griffins, that display is incredible. You have way more will than I do. If I took that picture, it would be a pic of a pile of wrappers. image

It will stay sealed. Guys in the set include Rocky marciano, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, etc. There are 96 total.

  • There are also some rarities in the set. Regular SP's and an ultra-hard Bob Murphy card.

I like this set a lot (more than the equally popular '48 Leaf and '56 Adventure) but the fact that there's no Jack Dempsey makes me angry. image
