1954 Topps Scoop cards - Please Help

From what I understand they originally came with saome sort of foil covering a portion of the card. Once the foil was scratched off it revealed info?

What did the foil cover up? The headline box on the front of the cards?

Thanks

Arthur

I was not aware of anything like that. I always thought they were just regular cards.

Larger then the 57's and up.

    Mantlefan would know.

    Good for you.

In the player registries they have two separate listings, one for cards w/ foil and one without.

  • Thanks Steve. I've been wondering about this for a while so it's much appreciated.

  • arthur-

where did you get that information?
are you certain you're not confusing this set with topps "who am i"?
believe that steve has confused this issue with 1960 nu-card scoops...
  • Mark,

I've got a Jack Dempsey Master set. In it, there are two entries for the 1954 Topps Scoops series for his card, one listed as w/ coating and one without.

I've also seen auctions (although rarely) where the seller advertises certain cards as "still with foil on." The scans were small and consisted of one pic of 9+ cards so I couldn't make out any differences. Unless the coating is on the back of the card.

I suppose it's possible that the registry has the two cards listed in error but I don't think that's the case.

    Arthur
  • Also, I just checked the pop report and they do list variations as "w/ coating."

Nope, i wasn't thinking of nu card scoops. I went to Ebay and saw an example. They look like the 56 Topps presidents set to me.

    Called Topps Scoops

did you notice that the only one dempsey psa has graded with coating did not even receive a grade (obviously only authenticated!)?

    perry-
    why would you think that?
those appear to be print lines that are commonly associated with that particular card.

That is what i thought too. But figured i'd ask.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Okay, this is weird. Both pandrews Ruth card and GeneralJim's Owens card have those black lines going through them. But I've watched/bid on (unsuccessfully, unfortunately) probably at least a half dozen Dempsey Defeats Willard cards from the set and never seen those black lines before.

P, there is a Marciano card in the set. "Marciano Knocks Out Walcott" I believe. By the way, what's the deal with that Ruth? The corners on that look much better than the corners I usually see on the Scoop cards.

Not sure about that. I just checked the pop report online and it says the 1 graded example got a 7Q.

    Steve ,

If i get my card graded do you think the best i can expect to receive is a 3 because of the print lines ??

the ruth is strong for a 3, i assumed the black lines is what gave it a 3, because there are no creases, wrinkles or paper loss.. without the lines, its a 6 or possibly 7..

i believe that card was a psa 7 pd before re-graded nq...
i also think that i was the under-bidder.
do you remember who the seller was?
    was the cost like $99?

    back to the original question...
now that we're all just dyin' to know...
who can enlighten us about the "coating"?

Indeed, according to the B and E Price Guide, these cards were issued with two horizontal print bars across the card front. These were meant to be rubbed off and I guess that prolonged the suspense of what card you had pulled. Here's the page from B and E:

And I though that I had a problem. image

  • Mantlefan beat me to it - the black bars were just there to hide the "scoop" headline on the front, and the majority of the picture. I guess the best way to describe it was like scratching off a lottery ticket.

Obviously most people rubbed it off so they are very difficult to find intact.

I have this "set" and an unopened pack. I have 2 of the Feller cards, one clean and one unscratched. On the Feller, the two black swaths run verticle and cover most of the card. You can see a poertion of the caption and a portion of the picture

So the black lines are supposed to be there then? That would make Perry's card undergraded?
