Home PSA Set Registry Forum

March special should I???? Please help me make a decision.

I am trying to get 80 Burger King (phils and hit & run) graded cards to make a set on the registery but I think I have hit the wall. I know from the pop report that some of the cards are pop 4> and the star cards (ryan, rose, schmidt, etc..) I have in PSA 8 +, so is it worth it for me to get 25 cards graded in this set at the $5 per card ($125 total). I think that most cards will be PSA 7-9. I will be looking to sell this set then in 2 years +/-.

Thanks for the help.... James

Here's something I know a little bit about, BK cards. I have the #1 set right now on the 1980 PHR set. First off, throw the whole notion about getting PSA 10's from these cards, right out the window. PSA 10's from these are like a gift from God. Getting a 10 is so rare that 9's are something to be very pleased with. There is still enough product out there that more 10's will surface in the future, but they are still very tough. From my experience, a PSA 9 from any card in BK will usually sell for more than grading fees. If you were to just throw a PSA 9 common on ebay, then it would be hit or miss if the right person sees it to make the bid. If you find the right buyer on them (someone like me), you can get few times grading fee for a common PSA 9.

I've hit the wall a little bit on the 1980 PHR set. Right now there are 3 PSA 10's of 431 cards submitted. I have 2 of them but I couldn't compete with the Nolan Ryan guys when that card hit ebay a few weeks ago. When I find a PSA 9 that I need at this point, I'm willing to pay more than I know it's really worth. I don't go crazy but I know I'm throwing a few bucks down the drain to get it. For example my last trade was for a PSA 9 Dave Lopes. I gave a PSA 8 Lopes and a PSA 9 Nolan Ryan. I know the Ryan is the best card in the set but I really needed the Lopes 9 so it was a good deal for me.

If you submit these, then only send in stuff that has a shot at a 9. You don't want any 7's on 1980 stuff. 8 are OK if you're making the set but not for making a profit. Anything 9 though, you will be ok to submit, regardless of what vintage guys tell you. I know these sets well.

Edited to add: Any vintage guys that want to mock newer sets, look at the numbers. 1968 Topps right now is 2.205% PSA 10's and 1980 Burger King is at .696% PSA 10's. Although that may change slightly in the future, 1980 PHR is currently over 3 times tougher to get a PSA 10 on.

I really like the Burger King cards. I am also buying more OPC now as well. I think both are under-appreciated and under-valued.
  • Steve,

I believe that I bought my first graded BK from you, and I am striving to pass you for 1St on the registry. But some of the cards from the pop report have you and the #2 guy with the only graded cards. Thus it seems that I have no option to submit these cards in order to move up the list.

I will be sending these cards out soon and will post the grades when recieved. Hope I get something that I can boost about (PSA 10?).

I say go for it! I have grabbed up a couple of PSA 9's out of the BK PHR set...Seaver and Fingers. Im not making a strong run for it but there are many cards that dont even have 9 grades out there yet. I'd be interested in an duplicate 9's you may get....or anyone else for that matter!

    I love the late 70s-early 80s sets...my best memories!

I would say go for it as well. Some part of grading is subjective, so you may get a grader that gives you the benefit of the doubt. BK cards are hard to find graded, so part of the fun is self submission.
