I think I got a nice steal on E-Bay!

As a result of my recent tax return, I've decided to go back and try and complete a lot of the parallel and insert sets through the years that are still not completed. Today I've been on a Mantle Craze and have put together quite a few of the Mantle insert sets that I needed. One of which is the 1996 reproduction insert set with 15 cards in there. I see that in Beckett and many online dealers that this set (1-19) is going for over $100.00 on many occasions. Well today I found the link below and snatched it up;

I think I did pretty well here! image

I went thru that phase in 1996 and got the basic 1-19 then decided to go after the 20-36 from 1997. Mine are of the finest variety. Still have the protective film on the card. Then I decided to get the 1996 Topps stadium club set as well. Another 19 cards that chronicle the Mick's career.
    Cool little subsets.

Yeah, I think what got me going, in addition to now having the funds, is seeing all these great pics people are posting of their old cards. Being able to see all of the Mick's Topps cards will be nice and this is really the only way I can afford it.

Now I have to decide if I want to go and get the Aaron, Mays, Clemente and Ryan sets that are out there too. image (Eventually of course I will).

    It's a really nice set.

I never completed it but did pull them while working on the regular 96T set.

Interesting story - the boxes were hot in '96 - I went to a show and picked one up.

It cost me 60 bucks for 36 packs - which was a lot of money back then.

I pulled ZERO Mantles!!! It was the first box I bought - so I was disappointed. When they came out at the Px, I was pulling like 3-4 per box I believe?

Well, I cut off the UPC code and mailed it to Topps. I just wanted to vent - I told them I understand - the pack odds are just that - odds - but since they were selling above retail now - it was an added "hit!"

To my surprise...a few weeks later, they sent me 4 Mantles!!!

    Very nice pickup Jdurg.

Wow. Awesome story there Stone. I've heard that Topps has some pretty good customer service and that's just another example of it.

I can't wait for the cards to arrive. I also hope I win the other sets that I've bid on because I like these little inserts. I get the feeling that I won't be winning them, however. I've looked at the bid history on these auctions and see some pretty consistent names there. When looking at that person's bid history, I see that he's been sniping any of these insert cards no matter what the price. So even though my max bid is truly the highest I'm willing to pay, I think I'll get sniped by the guy who buys the sets then breaks them up and resells them. image

Thanks for bringing up these sets!

I was a fan of these Mantle commemorative sets (as well as ones for Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, and other greats)

I spent a lot of time (patiently) and built the 1996 Mantle regular set through singles/small lots from eBay and other internet sources. I completed the 1996 Topps Mantle (19 cards) for a total price of $34.34 (including all shipping costs)image

I completed the 1997 Willie Mays Finest set (27 cards) for a total of $53.04

I haven't been actively working on these sets for a while, But if anyone else is working on these sets and wants to trade/sell/buy with each other to finish our sets, here some of my needs/haves for trade/sell:

    Mickey Mantle:
1994 Upper Deck Mantle Heroes (need 1--have 1 for trade/sell)
    1996 Stadium Club Mantle (need 1--have 2 for trade/sell)
    1996 Topps Mantle (completed--have 9 for trade/sell)
1996 Topps Mantle Finest (need 3)
    1997 Topps Mantle (need 3)
    1997 Topps Mantle Finest (need 1--have 2 for trade/sell)
2001 Upper Deck Pinstripe Exclusives Mantle (need 2--have 13 for trade/sell)

    Willie Mays:
    1997 Topps Mays (need 4--have 6 for trade/sell)
    1997 Topps Mays Finest (completed--have 1 for trade/sell)

    Nolan Ryan:
1991 Upper Deck Ryan Heroes (completed--have 16 including duplicates of most for trade/sell)
    1999 Topps Ryan (need 4--have 1 for trade/sell)
    1999 Topps Ryan Finest (need 13--have 1 for trade/sell)

    Hank Aaron:
1991 Upper Deck Aaron Heroes (need 1--have 7 for trade/sell)
    2000 Topps Aaron (need 1--have 7 for trade/sell)
2000 Topps Aaron Chrome (need 18)

    Reggie Jackson:
1990 Upper Deck Jackson Heroes (completed--none for trade/sell)
1993 Upper Deck Clark Reggie Jackson (completed--have 2 for trade/sell)

    Joe DiMaggio:
2001 Upper Deck Pinstripe Exclusives DiMaggio (completed--have 6 for trade/sell)

    Stan Musial:
1999 Fleer Stan Musial Monumental Moments (need 5)

    Roberto Clemente:
    1998 Topps Clemente (need 14)

I am also working on a few football commemorative sets like 1996 Topps Namath, 2000 Topps Unitas, 2001 Topps Walter Payton, 2002 Topps Bradshaw of anyone also collects football.

Let's help each other out if possible!image

Once all the auctions I'm bidding on ends tomorrow, I'll let you know what I still need and what I have some extras of too.

I'm hoping I don't get outbid at the last minute on the sets I'm bidding on. Another half-hour to go to see which random dealer will outbid me, break up the sets and then sell them for twice the price they paid. image

Okay, woo-hoo. I just got the Nolan Ryan set for $56.00 total. Whew. Survived one auction. Just three more to go! image

Well I just got outsniped on the Hank Aaron set which would have been a nice pick-up at $45 bucks, but oh well. I now have to outdo the last second bidders on the Mantle and Clemente sets. image

Alright, I got the Mantle set for $42.00. So I got the entire 1996-1997 Mantle Insert Reprints for a total of about $100.00. Not bad indeed! image If I didn't have to go to work tomorrow, I'd stay up the next half-hour to see if I win the Mays auction, but if I don't, oh well. I got the Ryan one done with which is pretty good, and the Mantle is done so that's good enough for today. image
