1979 Topps Baseball...

Okay. I know a lot is going on, but I just wanted to talk about something else. My Turkey Red set is coming to completion (8 cards away). I'm starting on the 79 Topps set now. I put it on hold for a bit, but I'm going to dig into it now. Anyone else collect this set? What were some hard cards to come by?

  • There was a pretty good thread going on this set on the Set Registry board. Packman is the resident expert. Seems like alot of cards in this set are tough to come by due to centering.

I dont really collect the whole set, But I have a lot of the stars in high grade from this set.
Mikey is correct in that centering is all over the place on these. Even if you buy a holdered card in 9 centering can be very liberal.
The Oz is of course the big card and commands a premium in high grade because of the centering issues.

I like the 79's and own a few. Centering will drive you nuts, but they are some handsome cards IMO. I have also noticed more than the normal amount of tilt cuts as well.

Good luck, I think you'll have fun with this set.

    guru,
some next week when the mail arrives i should be 40%+ in psa 9 or above. this puts me #5 but considering this is 726 card set i have a long LONG way to go.

my advice is to buy in bulk lots to save postage and try to buy cheap. don't go crazy over any card but especially a common. it will take a long time to put the set together so most assuredly any card you get outbid on will be available down the road. not rocket science advice but slow and steady with an eye on financial prudence will make this an easier trip.

i have a few extra 9's so if you are interested in a fair deal let me know.

    thanks.
