Anaconda Rare Coins - Market Report & New Purchases! - Three Things Hurting the Market. What's H

Hello All,

Well, it’s been some time since Long Beach and I’ve finally got a free moment to sit down and write up a market report and send out an email with our new purchases. We came back with a veritable truckload of new coins including some attractive Early Copper Type, Gold, Bust Material, Colonials, and a handful of toned Morgans and Early Commemoratives, just to rattle off a few. I finally got the majority of our new purchases imaged, cataloged, listed on eBay, Certified Coin Exchange, and Heritage’s Virtual Bourse. For a while now I’ve been doing all of this myself along with the invoicing, shipping, sales, bookkeeping, accounting, and the like for ARC, but in January, we hired a new employee who is still learning the ropes to help with the post processing and grunt work associated with running a coin business smoothly. If you were at the Houston Money Show, you would have seen him (James) at our table along with my son Dylan, who had a blast running around selling coins.

My eldest son’s name is Dylan and he is 6 years old and a pretty smart and independent kid who is destined to be a coin dealer. I remember the one conversation I was eavesdropping on while I gave him an AU $10 indian to sell. He was standing in front of Lance Tchor’s table (Federal Coin and Bullion) while Lance was tallying up some prices near the end of the show. Dylan waited patiently for Lance to finish and offered the coin to him and Lance declined it very respectfully. I won’t forget when Dylan turned around and looked me dead in the eye and said “He just wasted my time!” in a loud enough voice that I heard it from 10 or so feet away. Dylan was about 3 feet from Lance’s table. We all had a good laugh. In all, Dylan managed to sell about $750 worth of some circulated stuff we had laying around. What Dylan didn’t realize is that you have to deduct what you paid for the coins before determining how much you made. That didn’t matter to him because according to Dylan, he came out $750 ahead. What he did with the money I thought was very smart and nice. He bought his little brother Parker (3 yrs old) a second hand Game Boy Advance with a Ninja Turtles game and himself a second hand playstation 2 game from the game store and put the rest of the money away in his piggy bank. That’s my boy.

Anyway, I’ll get to the market report in a second. First, I have some good news.

1. We will now be shipping ALL packages over $500 via USPS Express Mail Overnight. We used to ship coins via registered mail which took forever to get to clients. Now, you can expect your coins the day after you purchase them (assuming you didn’t call me at 11:00 PM which I don’t mind, just buy something if you call that late so that I can justify to my wife taking time out from giving her nightly massage. J).

2. I will be introducing new features to our website which will allow you to track your consignments to us.

3. Our website will soon have a Best Offer feature where you can send me a ridiculously low offer for our coins and I can send you a ridiculously high offer right back so that we can eventually meet in the middle all from the comfort of your laptop or home office, or wherever you may be sitting while surfing the internet.

Update on the Charlotte ANA:

I’ve got bad news and good news. First the Bad news, we will not be attending the Charlotte ANA. Now for the good news. My sister will be getting married on St. Patrick’s day (my last name is Kelley, go figure.). I’m very happy for my sister as I’ve already been married for um….hang on…where is that calendar….Oh yea, Five years on June 1st. However, we will be in Baltimore on March 21st through the 24th.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What’s Hot and What’s Not in the Market:

Early Type is where it’s at. Everything Bust is really hot right now but you can smell the distinct differences in the values brought by NGC and PCGS graded coins of early type material. When buying NGC coins, look for the no-brainer dead-on or PQ coins for the grade and try to get them cheap as most NGC examples, even properly graded coins, are going for a good chunk less than PCGS examples. There are still nice coins in NGC holders, you just have to know where to look for them and how to spot them.

Hot: Anything Bust
Not: Anything Walking image

Hot: Early Copper dated 1793 through 1807.
Not: Barbers are still hurting

Hot: Just about anything Gold.
Not: I heard something about premiums for gold buffalos finally tanking. Beware the hype. Oh well, guess I just contradicted what I just said about all Gold being hot.<homer>D’oh</homer>

Hot: Atomic Chicken Wings from WingStop
Not: Hooter’s Chicken Wings.

Getting Hotter: I’ve noticed a light upswing in sales of mint state and proof seated material.
Getting Cooler: Early Commemoratives.

Getting Warmer: Colonials
Getting Colder: Proof Three Cent Silvers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for a Section I call “What is Hurting the Market?”

1.eBay is hurting the market by allowing people to get seriously burned by scammers selling overgraded, cleaned, problem, AT, and just plain crap to the unsuspecting public. Did you remember when you first started collecting? What if your first purchase would have been a coin that you bought as an MS63 and it turned out it was more like AU55? I would be willing to bet that 1 out of every 3 people that this happens to will drop the hobby and never return. Yeah, it happens and I see it everyday and honestly, it’s really starting to get under my skin. Sure I made up the statistic, but I bet it’s pretty darn close to accurate. Aside from going out on a limb and buying raw coins, how do these people get burned? Well, for one thing they trust the….Third World Slabs.

2. Third World Slabs are slabbing “companies” that are basically designed to fool the unsuspecting public. They put grades of MS65 and MS63 on coins that are barely better than AU. People put faith in these scummy slabs and some end up shelling out big bucks thinking they are getting a bargain (because these don’t sell for nearly what they would if they were actually the grade they put on the slab). This “getting it cheap” frame of mind is the temptation that these slab makers are exploiting. While these coins don’t bring near what they should for the assigned grade, they cheapen the market and drive away future generations of collectors.

3. Overgrading of coins by REAL Third Party Grading Services such as PCGS and NGC. What? PCGS overgrades coins? Damn straight. So does NGC. It’s not a mystery, nor is it rocket science. Take this into consideration. If you are a collector or dealer who wants to maximize the value of his coins and sends them all in for grading numerous times until all of them are either overgraded or maxed out grade-wise you would have to be a fool to crack any out and downgrade them. These coins are hanging around and while they may be nice coins for an MS63 or MS64, they are dogs as MS65’s and MS66’s and will never, or should never, sell for what the market values that coin at the grade it was over-assigned. Hence, price guides are held down for accurately graded and PQ coins to absorb the prices realized for the overgraded crap in holders out there. The grading services would be in debt millions and millions of dollars if they were to offer to rid the market of their own mistakes, but by not doing so, it hurts the very products and services they provide. Because, as more and more overgraded coins come out of the woodwork, it will drive down prices for ALL coins graded by that grading service and the market will view coins by that grading service as inferior. The seed has then been planted. Is it time to start buying coins again instead of plastic?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, now that my incessant ranting and personal insight are over and done with, here are our new purchases.

-Thanks,
-Brandon Kelley
