Corner Sharpness

Looking at my corners ( 51 Bowmans ) with a standard 3x mag glass and then looking at them with an 8X power cup that I use for viewing my airliner slides is a big difference
Hell you can change a corner ever so slightly only visible with the 8X just by putting them in a Card Saver II holder
It is beyond me how a 55 year old card if ,even if kept is a shoebox and never looked at/touched ( which is hard to believe ),can get a 9 rating with supposedly 4 sharp corners unless they use a different standard than they use for the 80s on up

But a lot of it can just come down to a simple find of material. One of the cards in my 1955 Bowman set was a Bob Grim Rookie card, that was graded PSA 9 MINT. The card came from Steve Pekovich, who simply had a 1955 Bowman cello pack of cards that developed a tear. Since a torn cello isn't worth much, they popped the pack and submitted the best cards. Two of the cards came back as PSA 9 MINT, including the Grim card:
Under 10x mag, they may not look razor sharp -- but they are about as sharp as can be, and definitely exhibited no wear whatsoever.

Wow! That's one fine looking '55 Bowman
How are the corners compared to other 51s

And am I the only who believes that now that we have graded slabbed cards, that the highest grade a raw card can get is NRMT/MT (as in the old days, a card had to be PERFECT in every way to qualify as mint), and that cards can only be Mint or Gem Mint if any only if professionally graded as such.

<< <i>Those are great corners. Card looks untrimmed. Based on the scan a definite 7 but a real good shot at an 8. Top left corner looks like it has a slight issue? I'm assuming the scan is showing much more than the eye can see unless there is an invisible wrinkle. That card is a beauty. Slab it in a PSA or SGC.

All my 51s and 50 Bowman BB and FB were collected by me as a teenager by buying the gum one pack at a time--weren't no cases back then

<< <i>I don't think they judge the corners with the loop. It is to search for imperfections in the print etc... If you go by there guidelines it doesn't say anything about a loop for corners. I'm sure they go by eye on the corners. When will it stop. Next it will be a 100X loop ? Every card has flaws if you look close enough. So there really would not be any PSA 9's or 10's for that matter.

Agree a plain household3x mag should be the limit

Very close. Graders do not loupe corners regularly. They use the loupes for spotting alterations

That is one fine looking Mays RC. Great centering too!
I hope you get a high grade on it.
